Among most Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines so far has the highest running mortality rate from COVID-19 at 9.62%. This is more than double the global average of 3.6% and higher than mainland China's 3.91%.

Epidemiologists, virologists and other experts are telling us #COVID-19 is serious and we should make sure we take precautions to limit its spread.

And yet I still see people shaming those who are worried and calling it a “media-induced panic.”

Let's do a quick numbers thread.
Let’s say the mortality rate for #COVID-19 is 2% - a mid-range estimate by current worldwide numbers - and 50% of the Canadian population contracts the virus (estimates are between 30%-70%, so again, I’m going mid-range for numbers.)
The 2019 census tells us there are 37,590,000 Canadians.

Half our population is 18,795,00.

2% mortality rate results in 375,900 deaths. That’s a lot of people. That’s a small city - gone.

This makes several useful points about cohort. Are we comparing apples with apples? Are the cohort selection criteria the same from state to state and country to country.

The answer is clearly NO regarding country to country.

Something is going badly wrong in USA
In the U.K. the Dept of Health are correctly imposing a nationally coherent strategy with common surveillance software.

As is evident from the embedded thread, in the USA they cannot say with any certainty how many people have been tested in each state and county.
So who knows what meaning to attach to positive tests?

Firstly. Why would the CDC or states or counties seek to conceal the number of tests being carried out?

I can’t think of a good scientific reason.

Political ones maybe..but not good for citizens.

Speaking only for myself, here is what scares me about #COVID.

(Short thread)
The #COVID19 discussions is largely centered on the who, what and why of those infected.

That’s a data point, but not the story.

The story is the is the potential severity of the disruption beyond those infected.

And it has the potential to be significant.
There is potential for significant economic, workforce & education disruptions.

We are already seeing this in some regions. Companies implementing work from home or slowing production. Conferences canceled. Students home from school.

Its reasonable to expect this continues.

Snow cover is already shrinking too.
"Arctic June snow cover extent on land declined by 13.4 ± 5.4% per decade from 1967 to 2018, a total loss of approximately 2.5 million km2, predominantly due to surface air temperature increase (high confidence).
In nearly all high mountain areas, the depth, extent and duration of snow cover have declined over recent decades, especially at lower elevation (high confidence)."

To me, maternal and infant mortality rates are two of the most powerful overall metrics in healthcare.

Maternal and infant death rates aren't really medical measures as much as they are proxies for poverty; access to healthcare; and racial inequities in a country.

There are a healthy number of people who believe the U.S. has the best healthcare in the world. That's not close to true.

While we have as much overall medical expertise as any developed country, we lag far behind in affordability and access. More people die as a result.

2/
That comes into sharper focus when looking at maternal mortality because childbirth is a discrete early-to-midlife event less affected by things like disease.

It's a proxy for poverty, healthcare affordability, access to care, and the impact of long-term systemic inequities.
