Yesterday @UCU NEC passed serious motions + members have been asking for more detail - some require advice on wording before going to member but I'm pasting the rest on #Covid19 below.

Emergency Motion 1 @rorfitelli: On @UCU VP election+need for electronic hustings, bc well-informed democracy still matters even in a pandemic (an adapted version of @sheffielducu's motion that's been timed off the agenda from 2 Congresses now, it could have already been in place)

EM 2 @mark_pendleton + amendment (me): Response to COVID-19 (both passed)
Calls on GS to write to all HEIs + colleges urging closure + safeguarding pay + wellbeing of *all* staff

Here's how that will read as amended - this is what UCU will be pushing for:

Emergency Motion 3 (@carlomorelliUCU): pushes to halt teaching + crucially: *proper* engagement w staff unions on institutional responses. Also calls on UCEA+UUK to act to resolve disputes that highlight how maxed out + beyond capacity staff already are (which is true beyond HE)

Emergency Motion 4 (@HershMarion) on the same theme + emphasises again the need to protect staff from detriment, especially casualised + low paid staff. Re-emphasises need (as EM1) for guidance + support to branches navigating the pandemic bargaining context.

There was a further NEC #Covid19 motion (EM5) carried regarding how we best prioritise health and safety of staff + students, subject to further legal advice -- @UCU is getting wording of advice to members checked with respect to that one.

There was also an emergency meeting of HEC yesterday, from 330-430, following NEC. This met to discuss #Covid19 & the #UCUStrikes disputes. Serious decisions were made that will be communicated formally by @UCU HQ on Monday. HEC is taking #Covid19 seriously. Are our employers?
