Some thoughts on wanting others to “socially isolate” as you are:

1. Perhaps it’s the social scientist in me, but expecting all ppl to upend lifelong behaviors at the same rate in just a few days is a bit unrealistic—especially IRT a concept most had never heard of a week ago
2. Shaming others to behave as you want them to behave usually doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter what it is or how ethical the cause, shame is usually an inefficient or counterproductive tactic
3. “Yeah but ppl who are socializing are selfish!” Ppl are responding to many sociological, political, historical & economic forces. They’re not floating signifiers. For some being sent home is being sent to a domestic abuser or towards an isolation which causes mental anguish.
4. Ppl may feel pressured to stay home or to go out. Or to support their local business. Or to support wait staff at their local business. Just as telling ppl not to have sex (something ppl must do) or to change sexual habits is tough/takes time, so does changing socialization.
5. “Yeah but this time it could hurt many.” Well, we all do things all the time that put others at risk. We pass homeless ppl. We spend money on vacations we could be giving to poorer ppl. This crisis affects many ppl who otherwise don’t fed afflicted.
6. I actually think ppl are adapting to a concept (social distancing) they hadn’t heard of a week ago. Like a week ago, I was speaking at a the kind of political rally that now seems unthinkable days later.
7. I’ve been thinking so much lately about understanding how it takes time for ppl diagnosed w HIV to accept their diagnoses. They read positive & it can take months or yes to accept it. If they don’t take meds time, it doesn’t mean they don’t care about themselves or others...
8. ...it’s just them, well, being human.

We’ve all been given a diagnosis that our way of life is dying. It’s never coming back.

How we’re socialized to be—and how we are socially & economically configured—is dying but still forms us.

Some adapt to this faster than others.
9. A lot of my followers are highly educated & understand asymptotic spread & compromises immune systems quickly & want immediate behavior changes to safeguard love ones.

A lot of my followers are not formally educated & not used to anyone giving a shit what happens to them.
10/10 It’s great if one can follow public health recs & model them.

But shaming others, strictly in terms of tactics, won’t work.

And again, the social scientist in me says: Don’t take it personally or think others don’t care if they behave differently than you’d like.
