NHS staff are working every hour there is, under very very dangerous conditions, to try to save as many lives as possible while keeping others safe.

McDonalds are doing their bit too: free hot and cold drinks for NHS staff, on production of a staff pass, for as long as the crisis endures and they're able to keep branches open...

Another gleam of positive news: the National Trust are trying to make as many of its parks and gardens as possible available *for free* so that people can have a bit of a break from being cooped up (houses, cafes & shops will be closed though).
BrewDog have switched its distillery to making hand sanitiser, which it plans to give away free to those in need. (The specifics of how that would work aren't detailed, but I applaud the spirit until my hands smart.)

It has been and remains easy to be cynical about the BBC, but it's hard to fault their plans for revised programming during the crisis (see thread below for full list of changes). My one hope is that they will find a way to keep scrutinising politicians.

£330 billion is a big, reassuring number.

But if the funding is put forward with so many strings attached that nobody will avail themselves of it, that £330 billion is entirely fictitious.

Like the sub £100,000 paid to Windrush victims out of a compensation pot of £570 million.
Or the mere £50,000 handed out from the £150 million pot that formed part of the relief for properties with dangerous cladding like the type on Grenfell Tower.

If you favor taxing billionaires more, that means you want to transfer resources from @BillGates, who is revolutionizing philanthropy and saw #COVID19 threat years ago, to the US govt, who have disastrously bungled our response to the virus.

Here's why that's wrong.
Humans are deeply egalitarian, and it's our nature to be concerned about economic inequality. Through the 10,000 yrs of agriculture, those who amassed wealth did it by conquering mass regions and controlling masses of people. So that's our intuition about billionaires.
But in the last few centuries, with the industrial revolution, a new way to be rich appeared: Invent something that many people want, and scale production to benefit millions. More and more of our billionaires got their wealth by cleverly helping many people, @paulg style.

In my classroom, there are two doors to the hallway. One of them remains locked from the inside at all times. The other is the door students use to enter and leave class. It’s the only door I need to secure in the event of a lockdown.
