Now could be a great time for you finally organize your digital photographs. Here are some tips from Bentley Archivist Aprille McKay: @aprillem /1
First, figure out where your photos are. On your phone? Hard drive? Online image services such as Flickr, Facebook, GooglePhoto, Instagram? /2
Second (this is the hard part), make decisions about which photos are most important. Be picky! You're more likely to follow through if the project size is not overwhelming. And always keep the copy with the highest resolution. /3
Third, ORGANIZE your photos. Give the photos useful file names and tag photos with names of people or the events that they depict. Put them in directories or folders that would make sense to someone other than yourself. /4
Finally, put them somewhere safe! Make at least two copies -- one to keep on your hard drive and one on separate media such as thumb drives or cloud storage. /5
(You'll want to check on your photos annually to make sure you can still access/open them. It's a good idea to create copies to new media every few years.) /6
That's it! We archivists would be so happy if everyone did this. We often have to sift through thousands of sequentially numbered images right out of the camera with no contextual information. Help preserve history and curate your own stuff at the same time!
