My first 2 months at @EU_ScienceHub have been fascinating. I’ve begun to explore a rich tradition of scientific excellence spanning nearly 60 years.

Here are some of the things I have discovered so far ⬇️

In the past 15 years or so I have asked several Bollywood stars in interviews: why do you endorse #fairness products? Funny thing: most are unwilling to admit that their fairness brands are fairness brands. I kid you not. It has been quite surreal. (Contd)
In interviews I've done for TV & print, over the years stars have offered me variants of "these are brightening creams, not whitening creams", "blemish removers not fairness creams" etc. Some of that came together in this article I wrote in 2011: …navetticadgoes2themovies.blogspot.com/2015/04/stars-… (Contd)
By dropping "Fair" from #FairandLovely's name, @Unilever is continuing a pretence most Bollywood ambassadors of such brands have kept up for long. The name change is either pre-emptive or a bid to board the #BlackLivesMatter bandwagon. Shame. (Contd)

Step back & ask what is money?

Biggest threat to wealthy is exposing worth is a malleable human invention

@Teri_Kanefield nails it—democracy vs hierarchy

Declaration of Independence’s equal worth clashes with our innate differences

To what extent does worth lie in our humane treatment of others?

In our abilities, activities in context of others?

In our accumulation of wealth through our exchanges?

Worth & worthiness & our tenuous clutching to our own value frames freedom & humane choices or lack of them.
What’s likely driving the fervor to restart the economy at the expense of others lives is a fear that the longer we continue relying on essential workers previously labeled “menial” & “low value” we openly expose the lie that wealth is worth.

That we afford what we value.

Who Defines 'Fair'? What is #fairness in the tax code? The people insisting that "the rich" pair their "fair share" aren’t at all interested in “fair,” and the proof is everywhere. Consider:
1) Is it fair to tax saved money (that was already taxed) because the owner died? The estate tax may be politically logical and a valuable revenue instrument, but its imposition has nothing to do with “fair” -- especially when every dollar in an estate was already taxed once.
2) Or is it fair to tax the gains from investments when we don’t allow deductions for the losses...? Increased risks are added to the wrong side of the equation and reduce investments. Even if capital gains taxes are in some cases reasonable, they are NOT "fair".

*Mental health thread*

At least 1 in 4 of us are suffering with mental health illnesses.

We are all human and we do not know what trouble the human beside us is facing.

🙏 CHOOSE to listen, support, be kind & fair.

Your hello and smile may be what gives someone strength.
The thing about mental health is that it can seriously affect how we see things, how we perceive ourselves and others around us.

Negative thoughts of failure or self-criticism or loss of confidence being wrongly reinforced by how others treat us can affect how we feel.
Eventually it can all become overwhelming.

One can feel that they can no longer cope.

Choose not to be the person who takes away someone’s sense of security, self belief, sense of achievement or confidence.

* Burnout thread *

Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

3 dimensions:

- feeling exhausted

- feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job

- reduced professional efficacy.
Burn-out is included in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon.
Burnout is more likely to happen if we:
1) don't feel valued
2) don't feel like we are making an impact
3) have no autonomy over a situation

Activists urge #tobacco-style curbs on oil and gas #lobbying in EU

politico.eu/article/tobacc…

A thread 👇
Some NGOs, emboldened by a @WHO approach towards meetings with #tobacco lobbyists (@FCTCofficial art. 5.3), now want the #EU to shut the door to legitimate #lobbying by coal, #oil and gas lobbyists, too. What’s next? Every corporate lobbyist? #SlipperySlope?
Several reasons why this nonsensical: first, very few #NGOs or public officials have the deep expertise in energy markets that energy companies do. Excluding them from the process would sideline relevant legal #stakeholders who are affected by the proposed legislative changes.

“...people usually gain power through traits and actions that advance interests of others such as #empathy, #collaboration, openness, #fairness...when they start to feel powerful or enjoy position of privilege, those qualities begin to fade....(1)
...The powerful are more likely than other people to engage in rude, selfish and unethical behaviour” #RebeccaSolnit citing #DacherKeltner on his work studying relationship between empathy and power
“If power generates a cushion of obliviousness around it, those of us with power need to counter it. That means, first, treating people with respect, regardless of their status: not taking the invitation to disdain or ignore” #Solnit

My terrifying experience at all candidates forum in Vancouver-Granville, last night October 5, 2019!

Dumb argument: "All countries get 7% GC, so it is not discrimination"

(1) Individuals aren't countries. Conflating the two is absurd and unjust.
..(1/4)
/2 Law, rules, policies are evaluated on intent & impact.
Something appearing "neutral" superficially can impact one portion of the population adversely.

This is legal doctrine of 'disparate impact'.Discrimination by intent or by impact are both unlawful.
/3 Disparate impact is established grounds for Title VI claims. Supreme Court has ruled on this multiple times, multiple case laws.
Other e.g.: Poll taxes, literacy tests, property ownership were all ways racists used to disenfranchise black Americans from voting.

Today, @NITIAayog released a Discussion Paper titled ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence”. #AIforAll
niti.gov.in/writereaddata/…
We provide our initial thoughts on the paper here. 1/n
We welcome this initiative by @NITIAayog, but a call for comments would have been a welcome addition. The paper takes important steps forward from the #AI Task Force report released earlier this year by the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (dipp.nic.in/sites/default/…). 2/n
This paper attempts a more holistic look at a broader range of issues concerning AI including #regulation, #ethics, #fairness, #transparency and #accountability. However, a number of issues still remain with this paper. 3/n
