I've been doing lots of faculty workshops about teaching online this past week. I'll share what I'm learning from supporting instructors that might be useful to the #highered twitterverse. I'll preface w/ the fact that instructors are MOST concerned about their students. (THREAD)
2. The compassion instructors have for their students is really heartening, and it also speaks to the need to share some data with instructors about student tech access and usage. I've been trying to share @educause's great articles, like er.educause.edu/blogs/2020/3/s…
3. Many instructors are worried about basic tech literacy & the ability to adopt new solutions fast. I don't have good answers for this other than "start small" or "pick one thing and learn how to do what you can with that one thing." I've most often been sending folks to the LMS
4. I have mixed feelings about focusing so heavily on the LMS, but I do think that having one digital home place is really critical. I think the @gsoleducators "just-in-time" hub article on where-to-begin addresses this well (h/t @ciccamy): glosole.org/justintime.html
5. Many instructors are worried about how their home environments are not conducive to synchronous chat sessions (i.e. Zoom). I do think we need to be guiding people even more to asynchonous work. I've been sharing @dstanford's great chart abt this: iddblog.org/videoconferenc…
6. Folks are getting overwhelmed by too many msgs & pieces of advice, which FAIR. I've been trying to streamline communication onto a course page in the LMS (b/c it's familiar and not e-mail) to aggregate, organize links & resources.
7. But I think as someone supporting instructors, I've got more to learn about curation. What are the best ways to curate all great resources & materials out there to build online learning experiences for our own instructors? How do we model good instructional practice (quickly)?
8. But I think the most important thing I've taken away from providing support is recognizing that learning for everyone right now is just going to be hard. We're all doing the best that we can. I'm trying to be supportive of others, and striving to start small.
