The indispensable @juliettekayyem on the question of how long we'll be in sweatpants (i.e., what's the "endgame"?). She tentatively ventures 2 months--which depends on a dramatic short-term increase in testing & medical supplies that's by no means certain.

The key thing to understand, if I'm reading Juliette & @tomaspueyo correctly, is that the duration/extent of lockdowns is dependent almost entirely on when there'll be almost universal access to masks, ventilators &, esp., comprehensive testing. Daunting.

Threads from @trvrb and @ProfLWiley also concur w/@juliettekayyem and @tomaspueyo that the duration of separation practices depends crucially on when there'll be comprehensive testing of those who are *asymptomatic.*



P.S. Sure would be nice if the POTUS and other federal officials were to clearly explain this to the American public--and to offer some sense of when we might have Korea-level testing in place.

This piece fundamentally misrepresents @DavidColeACLU's argument in Harris Funeral Home. David never referred to Aimee Stephens as an “'insufficiently masculine' man"--let alone "repeatedly." Indeed, he began his argument with this simple declarative sentence: /1

"Aimee Stephens is a transgender woman." David never referred to Stephens as a man at all; nor "indicated that Aimee could be considered a male for the purposes of the statute"; nor "acquiesced to labeling Aimee as a 'biological male.'” /2
Instead, he (properly) referred to her only as a "woman" or w/female pronouns--and he did so more than three dozen times.

Nor did David "reinforce[] the proposition that the statute only reaches" discrimination on the basis of “biological sex," let alone do so "exclusively." /3

Is America ok with unconstitutional restrictions? This survey asked respondents about eight possible policy responses to the COVID-19 outbreak, "all of which," say the authors, "may be unconstitutional." Substantial majorities supported all of them. /1

This isn't very surprising in the midst of such a crisis. But it also might not be quite as alarming as the authors suggest: If the chart's any indication, the policies appear to have been described to the respondents at a very high level of generality. /2

Yet it's possible that as many as seven of them *could* be implemented in a constitutional way. The devil would be in the details of each of the policies. (And even the eighth, the speech restriction, could have *some* constitutional applications, e.g., cases of fraud.) /3

Can someone please answer this basic question? Person A (Trump) was in close contact (handshakes, etc.) w/B&C, who had the virus but were asymptomatic at the time. /1

Obviously, there was a *lower* risk of A contracting the virus than there would have been had B&C been coughing/sneezing. But it was still transmittable, of course, e.g., via B/C's hands. I can understand why perhaps testing wouldn't be done on most people in A's position ... /2
... *if* tests are scarce and thus must be reserved for needier cases.

HOWEVER, he's the POTUS, & he's in close contact w/most of the federal officials who are most important in dealing w/the crisis. So why is testing Trump "not currently indicated," as Dr. Conley asserts? /3

I felt it may useful to summarise the various intervention strategies available to us to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. So far, there are three basic strategies that have been considered. (1/29)
the chin’; (2) SUPPRESSION-SOC, which aims to stem the epidemic through behavioural changes; and (3) SUPPRESSION-EPI, which aims to stem the epidemic through enhanced testing and contact tracing. (2/29)
MITIGATION, SUPPRESSION-SOC, and SUPPRESSION-EPI represent extremes of a wider continuum, and they could in principle be used in conjunction. Though there can be trade-offs. For example, it could be challenging to implement SUPPRESSION-EPI in a society already in lockdown. (3/29)

1/ I can see 5 paths forward for #SCOTUS on the census case. First, if the Court rules against the government, then the issue can be neatly resolved in advance of the June 30 deadline. I see this path as unlikely--based on assignments, it looks like J. Alito has the majority.
2/ Second, the Court could request supplemental letter briefs about whether, in fact, the June 30 deadline is the real deadline. The Plaintiffs have suggested that the real deadline is October 31.
3/ However, there is a problem with requesting this information: such a request underscores the fact that the Court is deciding the case on an expedited deadline. In other words, speed, rather than accuracy, may be the deciding factor. That move would convey the wrong message.

NERD ALERT: Let’s talk about the Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) tariff in NY. I’ll give a trigger warning that there are suggestions in this thread that there is a life beyond net metering for states serious enough to overhaul their distribution systems.
the inspiration for this thread was an order out of the @NYSDPS last week on VDER. The order made some significant changes to reflect the long run value of distributed energy resources and make the tariff FAR more financeable and more attractive for solar-plus-storage. (2 of ?)
the changes ALSO, and more importantly, are way better for the grid. VaDER is leaving the dark side. It is going to get to be the successor to net metering that is fair to solar customers and all ratepayers; we'll get there, folks (3 of ?)

Alrighty - time to talk about mental toughness and emotional intelligence. I'll also talk about how to be a good teammate. All three of these were lessons that I've learned over the past three years, starting with my time playing for @SeattleSockeye .
This is a hard one for me and I've been pushing it off, at least sub-consciously, until now. I'll do my best to be honest and sincere. I'll also try to keep the typos to a minimum and keep things in chronological order. This'll probably be a long one. Good thing most are asleep!
On Monday I told my story up through the end of playing for @PrideofNY . In that thread I mentioned that I tore my [right] ACL. It was a complete tear (you can partially tear it) without any meniscus damage.

Simple, because it's not difficult to understand the essential principles of investing- a large opportunity, accretive earnings growth, high character & a certain degree of predictability. Not easy, because the required discipline is rare.
