1. Amazon, owned by the richest man in the world, is soliciting PUBLIC DONATIONS to pay sick leave for contract drivers who contract COVID-19

2. Amazon has one of the worst policies for workers who contract COVID-19. Requires a positive test or a formal quarantine order to get paid.

But contractors have it even worse. They have to apply for a "grant" from the Amazon Relief Fund.

Apparently someone realized this looked bad so later they added language saying the "aren't expecting" anyone to donate.

7. UPDATE: Amazon has responded and they say that it is COMPLETELY NORMAL for a company with $281 billion of revenue last year to require workers who contract a potentially-deadly virus to APPLY FOR A GRANT to get paid while they are quarantined.

8. Amazon also claims it has "not asked for donations" despite the fact that it created a public website for this grant fund that solicited donations. The initial version had a way to donate via text!

1. I spent the last few days communicating with more than four dozen pizza workers at @dominos, @pizzahut, and @PapaJohns.

I wanted to find out what it was like to make and deliver pizza for these companies during a pandemic.

It's not pretty.

2. Out of 52 drivers, cooks, and managers I spoke to at the 3 companies, just one reported receiving a mask.

A handful said they were provided gloves or sanitizer.

The vast majority received no protective equipment.

3. Social distancing as a pizza worker is almost impossible. Cooks worked in cramped facilities.

All three chains tout "contactless delivery" but they make it optional. Drivers report that many people do not use that option and continue to pay cash.

Stay at home because you are saving lives but also realize that it's a privilege to stay at home and millions of Americans can't because they need to keep their jobs and they have to go to work so the rest of us can mostly stay at home and survive
One of the things that has been bothering me is how everyone w/a platform is telling people to stay at home but its much rarer that people are actually speaking out for the people that can't stay at home

Google isn't running a message of its home page demanding paid sick leave
But it's just as important that the people who can't stay at home are treated with respect. They matter too. They all deserve paid sick leave, and protective gear, and A LIVING WAGE

The fact that there are people risking their lives with no protection for $8/hour is a disgrace

3. But the @USChamber is a membership organization. It represents businesses. So if powerful companies who are members speak out against this lobbying campaign, they could stop it

That could increase the chances Trump would act

COVID-19 has spread to 7 states now. The US will struggle to limit the danger and damage from the virus for several reasons, not just the incompetence & secrecy of the Trump Administration. Without universal health insurance & the need for a public option in ACA, people may
not go to the clinic. Then the Trump Admin decided to pass responsibility for creating tests to private businesses, ensuring they will be more expensive. The Trump Admin's neglect of Puerto Rico has already led to drug shortages and serious shortages of saline.
Then there are all the occupations that don't get sick pay. People cannot forego their rent and utilities for the community good. Then there are the places where an absence means getting fired. We are very punitive to employees in many occupations disallowing sickness.
