I want to say a few things to all the creators, artists, authors, musicians out there:

It is OK if you aren’t producing or creating right now.

I’ll tell you why.
Grief and trauma affect us all in different ways, but they do AFFECT US.

Is it hard to create right now? That’s okay. We need YOU, because at some point, it will be time again, and we will be ready.
Some of us are losing our income, some of us are beyond lonely, some of us are grieving the loss of a loved one, some of us can’t get one good night of sleep.

So, right now instead of being the well, you get to draw from one.
Listen to your favorite music.
Last night we watched Dave Matthews’ live performance and wept through it.

I remembered what music means.

I’ve picked up my guitar again, just to play cover songs I love, because it’s therapy.
Draw from the well of authors who are doing online readings. Draw from artists who are teaching your kids to paint. Draw from the puzzle sitting on your table.

You don’t have to produce right now in this grief.
If an idea begins to stir but your body is telling you it can’t go there, write it down, to return to it days, weeks, months, maybe even years from now when you need it, when you are ready.

Journal your thoughts.
Let your body lead you.
Rest when you’re tired.
I just want you to know you’re not alone.
I want you to know that this struggle is real and it’s communal and we are all finding our way.

Fill up your well.
Then, maybe what spills over will surprise you, and we will all be there, waiting, welcoming you back.
