While I honestly wish it was a boring week and I didn’t have anything to say, I do, of course, because Thanksgiving.

It’s about the damn SNL sketch.

I just want to point out a few things that were joked about that shouldn’t have been.

First, it’s a real shame that news outlets are already framing it like, “SNL did something really funny but THOSE PEOPLE still have problems with it.”

It reeks of “get over it” and sorry, but no. This is America’s entire problematic history and you’re laughing about it all.

I don’t know why the hell they decided to do yet *another* skit joking about Pocahontas’ story and trauma. They made light of so much of it, including the age difference between her and John.

That’s not a damn joke.
Genocide and sexual assault isn’t a joke.
Ever.

The part of the sketch about buffalo and land going missing triggered me, as an Indigenous woman, to wonder if he was going to add “women” to the list.

Y’all know Indigenous women go missing all the time? You know in 2019 we still face invisibility and trauma and abuse? #MMIWG

Sure, yeah, build a wall, that’s funny (but is it?).

A famous white actor in redface wearing buckskin joking about Fox News (or talking to a fox bc I guess that’s what we do) and “the chief” just reinforces a whole mess of stereotypes and that’s what people will take from this.

The whole point of the sketch to say that “we all poop the same” comes at the cost of Indigenous people, in this story, a young Indigenous woman.

“We all poop the same, so go ahead and colonize us. We’re all good except you have dirty hands.”

🤷🏻‍♀️

And, the ending of it.
To point out that a sketch is ridiculous and racist doesn’t make everything okay.
To literally make a joke out of white people in redface is fucking exhausting for us— you care that little about us as peoples?

Yeah.

Anyway, I’ll probably end up muting this thread and unplugging from twitter this week because I’m not sure how to hold these spaces.

If you’re white, speak up about the wrong things before Natives have to point them out as wrong.

I’m grateful for those of you that do.
