Newly published article by my colleague @RexBrynen at McGill University on how digital war is reinvigorating analog #wargaming. If you’re surprised by this, read his article. [1/7]
Agree with Rex that analog #wargaming is “more flexible, creative, and responsive than their digital counterparts” even when addressing digital issues. I have found this true in my own wargames of future AI & autonomous systems. [2/7]
Rex is right to point out the trend of war itself becoming more digital yet #wargaming remaining analog. There are real reasons for this, and it’s not technophobia. [3/7]
However, agree with Rex there are reasons to use analog games for digital war, such as “timelessness, transparency, and creativity.” Transparency is huge. I cannot emphasize this enough. [4/7]
When #wargaming topics like deterrence and escalation with AI and autonomous systems, creating digital gaming tools to replicate future AI and operational concepts in the game is technologically impossible and absolutely cost prohibitive. [5/7]

Manual games also gave us the flexibility to explore how escalation might play out rather than having it hardcoded into software that was a black box to players. When using #wargaming to develop theory, black boxes are not helpful. [6/7]
Manual games are significantly more flexible and adaptable than their digital counterparts. Low tech does NOT mean simple. Manual games can also be adapted on the fly when questions arise that no one thought of before. [7/7]
