When a smart person gets a thought that they think is original, they will investigate the topic to see if it is. Usually, they will discover that someone else got their first. They will then investigate further to see what other scholars commenting on the originator have said...
in order to expand their knowledge. If they are lucky they will find some angle that builds on the original thought and thus expands human knowledge, always aware that they are building on a foundation that others have built.

assume that no one else had it before and that they are therefore a genius. If they subsequently discover that someone else got there first, this will have no effect on their high opinion of themselves, deeming their ability to come up with the same idea independently puts...
them in the same class with the original thinker. Trump and Kushner are good examples of stupid people.

This is the most important graph explaining the US economy. Velocity is GDP divided by the money supply. A decline in velocity has the same effect as a decline in the money supply--deflation, low interest rates, slow GDP growth etc.
It's important because it's about to get a lot worse as GDP falls due to the effects of the virus and the Fed tries to keep the financial system from collapsing by raising the money supply. This means velocity will far further from an already low base.

Final proof that EVERYTHING Republicans said about Obama's stimulus in 2009 was a total lie. washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020… Also, EVERYTHING they said about Fed policy was a lie. They are shameless and Democrats always let them get away with it.
Even now, Democrats are very reluctant to criticize Trump's stimulus because (a) we need stimulus and (b) their programs will get a few bones thrown at them. In my opinion, this legislation should absolutely include a clawback of the 2017 tax give-away. I won't hold my breath.
I'm old enough to remember how upset the Tea Party was about TARP and how certain every member was that it was an Obama program. Actually, it was enacted by the Bush administration after its initial inaction on the economy--driven by free market ideology--made matters worse.

I never really understood Hannah Arandt's term "the banality of evil" until Trump.
It's the way evil people like Trump infect so many people who weren't evil by nature before coming in contact with him. It creeps up on them in baby steps. First you stay silent when lies are told, then you essentially confirm them, then you repeat them and so on.
By the time it dawns on people that they are handmaidens to evil they are in so deep they can't get out, can't afford the loss of income or friends or media attention. They made a deal with the devil and lack the courage to go back, admit error, try to fix what they helped break.

One of the most dangerous journeys you can go as an ordinary individual, is to bring down a powerful force.

Most of the time, you don't go unscathed.

It's either, the force completely cancel you out of the game, or it crashes down on you as you try to bring it down
It is highly recommended you avoid anything that is more powerful than you, even if it feels like they acted in ways you assume is unfair to you.

At least, One advantage is you get to stay in the game a little longer, and you get a chance to be a force of your own too

I'd highly recommend reading the thread, but TL;DR
We receive/create/use knowledge based on our viewpoint, which is impacted by aspects of our identity
Therefore, knowledge will be biased and flawed if we rely on the perspective of those outside an identity rather than within
To expand it out a bit (thanks to someone's insightful comment), I think we also need to understand that our academic knowledge base is already *incredibly* biased, as we have centuries of Western academia focusing on the perspectives/knowledge of a single group: cishet white men

As an avid reader of advice columns, there is an inescapable pattern in questions submitted by women. A great many of them, no matter the ostensible topic, boil down to a variant on "How do I deal with [toxic/unworkable/uncomfortable situation] without upsetting anyone?" 1/10
Why is "not upsetting anyone" such a huge concern? Because I hate to tell you this, but a lot of the time addressing a situation in which someone else is causing you distress without causing them any is not really an option. Why does theirs matter more than yours? 2/10
If the person in question was reasonable and mature, they'd be able to accept being confronted without getting upset. But if they were reasonable and mature, you probably wouldn't be in [situation] in the first place. 3/10

There's a funny thing I keep noticing. Really good stuff comes at two price points: *cheap* but you have to really do some digging, and 10x the price, and you just type it into google. Let me post a couple of examples in this short thread.
Fountain pens for a tenner google.com/search?ei=zigk… but it doesn't sing until you add ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr… total system cost below £15, and writes as well as anything you're going to come across. But the supply chain is fragile. Edge of a trade network, wobbly shipping, comms.
Backpacks, compare amazon.co.uk/AI-ONE-Tactica… to leaf.arcteryx.com/ch/en/shop/ass… These things are *remarkably* similar in basic concept, if not in materials and execution. One of them is 15x the price of the other. But there's a sea of 1900 molle packs which are in that general format.
