OTD Raphael was born (in 1483) and died (in 1520). Master of color, stylistic chameleon, and by all accounts a really nice guy. A small sampling of his genius.

The Liberation of Saint Peter (1514), in which he has some fun with Vatican architecture.
The Transfiguration (1520). After his death, his body was laid out in his studio so mourners could pay their respects. This work, which was essentially (but not completely) finished, was at his head.
A study of Pietro Perugino's Lamentation. Perugino was his master.
The Spozalizio. On the left is Raphael, right is Perugino. Raphael's is technically superior, apparently. I can't tell. Both look great.
Just a few more, then I'm done.

La Valeta (1514). Look at that sleeve. Only Titian comes close to matching it.
Also, in case you were wondering, the pose and style of La Valeta is a direct and intentional quotation of the Mona Lisa.

Here's the Portrait of Bindo Altoviti (1514), almost Durer-esque.
And lastly, best of all, Raphael's portrait of Pope Julius II (1511). One of the great Renaissance popes, a man of incredible intelligence, power, and ambition. He is shown here, just months before his death, knowing that few of his achievements will outlast his lifetime.
