Contrary to his previous assertions, the Austrian right-wing populist and former Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache apparently described Jews as "opponents" and "lustful for power".
Strache had previously claimed to have "never" made anti-Semitic comments. According to an expert, it was "with a certainty bordering on certainty" that Strache himself wrote the anti-Semitic statements by hand in a clearly anti-Semitic book.
When asked about his lawyer, Strache said that he could not remember the book or such a dedication. The 273-page book is the "Jewish Confessions from All Times and Countries" by the anti-Semitic author Hans Jonak von Freyenwald.
The original was published in 1941 by the National Socialist Stürmer Verlag. The book with the dedication is a reprint from 1992. Strache could have written it by hand at the earliest in the early 1990s -
and thus at a time when he was already a district politician in the FPÖ in Vienna. "This is a work for fanatic anti-Semites," says Wolfgang Benz, the former head of the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism in Berlin, about the "Jewish Confessions".
"You can find all the typical Jewish stereotypes, business-minded, cowardly, lazy, belligerent, the book is a compendium of anti-Semitism." Strache said through his lawyer that he did not know the content of the book.
However, he would "distance himself from his statements without restrictions" if the book had the "outlined anti-Jewish content". He rejects anti-Semitism "out of deep conviction".
The hate script is said to have signed Strache for a companion from right-wing extremist circles, so an informant to a newspaper who wishes to remain anonymous has sworn affidavit. The supposedly gifted person belonged to the milieu of German-national connections,
after his death the book was leaked with Strache's dedication to the newspaper. Strache told his lawyer that he knew the man. In his opinion, a commissioned expert for handwriting examinations came to the conclusion that the dedication came with a probability of
99.99 percent from Heinz-Christian Strache. The right-wing populist also wrote two slogans on the inside of the book cover. It is a quote from the anti-Semitic German historian and poet Ernst Moritz Arndt and a military-martial poem by
the Austrian National Socialist Joseph Hieß, who died in 1973. Strache's earlier proximity to the extreme right-wing milieu has long been known. However, he had turned away from the scene "as early as the early 1990s," his lawyer said.
Strache rejects anti-Semitism "firmly and with full conviction". In addition, he has clearly represented "pro-Israel positions" for years. Strache resigned as Austrian Vice Chancellor in 2019 after SZ and Spiegel
revealed that he had shown himself open to corrupt business at a meeting in Ibiza. The right-wing populist was excluded from his former party - the FPÖ - in the course of the Ibiza affair. In the Vienna state and local council elections in October,
Strache is now the top candidate of the newly founded "Team HC Strache" party.
The dedication, signed with Heinz-Christian Strache: "This book should give you an insight into the Jewish confusing and lustful world of ideas."
