Who is a psychologist? Why do we need one? I'm not crazy, why should I visit a psychologist? I would rather talk to a friend instead of talking to a psychologist. Approaching a psychologist puts my honour at risk, and also my family's.
Several questions of such kind always occur in our mind, when it is suggested to us to visit a psychologist. We need to understand why it is important to talk to a psychologist when in need. We need to understand the importance of being aware, and taking care of our mental health
And before that, it is important to understand what a psychologist is and how he or she can help us when in need.
A Psychologist is a person who studies our mental process and behaviour by observing, interpreting and recording how we relate ourselves with others, and with the environment.
Throughout these processes, he/she helps us to alleviate anxiety, depression, guilt, phobias and other problems. Depending upon the problem, a psychologist uses different techniques to treat our symptoms which helps us to improve our overall health.
If you are going through tough times, feeling unhappy, anxious or unsatisfied with yourself and your life, instead of suppressing your feelings or attempting untrained self-therapy techniques, it is important to seek help from a trained psychologist.
They will help you to identify the areas of improvement, and show you that discussing your problems is helpful.

Of course, you can talk to your friends or family. It is surely important to get support from them if you're suffering emotionally.
But friendship can't do the work of psychotherapy. A therapeutic relationship is different than friendship.
A psychologist or a therapist is a trained listener who not only supports but also helps you to find the source of your problem, even if the source is your own thoughts, your family, your friends or you.
They are trained listeners and will listen to you for long duration of time without judgements or prejudices. Are your friends going to sit down talking about YOU all the time, every week? Think.....
For a psychologist, counseling is strictly CONFIDENTIAL. They follow strict ethical rules and standards.
It would not be ok for a counselor to inform anybody about what you said, or even disclose that you were taking counseling from them, until and unless it is a very exceptional situation, and also not without your consent.
So friends, a psychologist can help you to get the most out of your life, keep you free from any symptoms of depression and other mental health issues.
If you are worried or sad all the time, fearful, experience difficulty in concentrating, learning, or go through confused thinking, extremely high and low moods, social withdrawal, drastic changes in eating, sleeping habits, consider these as the alarming bells of mental illness.
It's time to visit a psychologist, a counselor. It's not easy to visit or to talk to a stranger, but they know that and are trained to make you feel comfortable. Feel free to go, to talk, they are there for you.
Take good care of yourself and your mental health. Physical health and mental health should go hand in hand.
