Clear need to increase interdisciplinary knowledge on #HVAC, #building, #smartcities &&& working across diverse groups — Adam Jacobs from Optimal Energy

#BuildingTrades #SummerStudy20 Image
Some quick thoughts:
US construction is male & white; leading to systemic & intergenerational siphoning of contracts, social relationships & $$$$

Diversity & anti-racist policies need to implemented in bidding & contractors
Existing efforts at Municipal, State, & Federal seek to do ALL the things: gender equity & racial equity --->
Such policies lead to most contracts being given to white women (often married to white men contractors) with some or even little experience.

Such a policy perpetuates white supremacy within #construction & needs to be improved ASAP!
#SummerStudy20 @ACEEEdc
existing Corportae & Government policies would do good to explicitly develop #antiracist policies in contracts to redisitribute and diversity #construction & #smartcities contracts.
#SummerStudy20
A start could be:
(1) Develop or continue supporting skill building for #Black, #Hispanic & #Indigenous communities
(2) Redesign contract requirements to explicitly be #antiracist -->set requirments for % of contracts to such building contractors
&& #SummerStudy20 thoughts?
@EllisonCarter thank you for moderating this panel! I really enjoyed and am grateful for the questions and opportunity to learn! #SummerStudy20

An imperfect thread on some intersections of #BehavioralScience + #ComplexSystems

@DavidPerrott_ @g_arteagoitia
Some ppl recognize behavioral science is in its adolescents in a lot ways. While behavioral scientists have identified design that work really well (you know:
opt-out organ donation @ProfEricJohnson & @dggoldst
Save More for Tomorrow @R_Thaler & @shlomobenartzi)
These are wonderful & we should keep doing these!

But these are only a beginning manifestation of behavioral design & never meant to encompass all of behavioral science

The problem some see is that #nudges are designed in STABLE contexts & with specific demographics

"When making decisions, instead of asking ourselves which option will give us the best results, we should be asking which option will give us good-enough results under the widest range of future states of the world."
psyche.co/ideas/why-effi… via @psyche_the_mag
"And satisficing with an eye toward a radically uncertain future might be called robust satisficing."

Good enough seems to be a better bet - especially as we become familiar with the variability and swift state changes common to #ComplexSystems
So much of #ResilienceTheory has led us to question our #DecisionMaking ; and the hyper-focused drive toward #Efficiency rather than #Resiliency

Current problems within market transformations include:
(1) diminishing opportunities for cost-effective #energy savings
(2) there's a need for longer term savings to achieve goals
The Midwest Market Transformation initiative looks to align interests & provide the best regulatory practices given regional policy factors

The burdens of #ClimateChange change are disproportionately placed on people in poverty

@CecilCorbinMark
@aceee #SummerStudy20

Which includes #buildings
For instance, as @CecilCorbinMark, demonstrates this point with:

Air Conditioning during all time high heat waves.

People in poverty may be inequitably burdened by:
Experiencing a heat wave bc their home does not have an air conditioning unit.

Heat waves can cause:
heat exhaustion,
triggering asthma,
organ damage

In elderly populations, this can result in death.
