1/9 Ever felt paralyzed by indecision, unable to choose between two equally good options? Meet the paradoxical "Buridan's Donkey" 🐴, a mental model that epitomizes this struggle. #ThinkersToolkit Image
2/9 This model is named after the 14th-century philosopher Jean Buridan. The donkey, positioned exactly midway between two identical bales of hay, dies of hunger, unable to make a rational decision to eat from one or the other. #MentalModels
3/9 Buridan's Donkey is a metaphor for the paradox of choice. We often face situations where we're torn between equally appealing options. The inability to choose can lead to inaction, which is a choice in itself - often detrimental. #DecisionMaking

AI effectively automates the mundane and routine but not the exception, especially the exceptional exception. Latter requires the Consciousness of human beings.
today's AI is exactly like Rahul Gandhi. It appears to do a lot of things, makes opaque overseas trips, gets plenty of press, and is always the future choice that is ready to take over.
good AI would practically sell itself sans human hype.

Do the strategic complexity of the decision environment and the participants’ cognitive ability affect their performance and neural response? You can find the answer in our new paper now (freely) available in @SciReports at… 1/7 Image
We explored the role of cognition and its inter-individual variability in social decision-making. First, we developed a new model of strategic #decisionmaking in repeated interactions to provide a precise measure of the environment’s complexity and participants’ performance. 2/7
Then we tested some empirical predictions of the model on both behavioral and neural data. We showed that deviations from optimal behavior are explained by a combination of higher complexity of the strategic environment and cognitive skills of the individuals. 3/7

How To Decide by Annie Duke.

A brilliant no frills book that offers a framework for thinking about how to improve your decision making , along with a set of tools that help execute it.

A few of my takeaways from this gem !
There are only 2 things that determine HOW your life turns out : LUCK & QUALITY OF DECISION MAKING.

We have some control over only one of those two things.

When you make better quality decisions, you increase the chances of good things happening to you.
Our objective is to choose an option that gains most ground in achieving our goals.
Sometimes which entails the least risk.

Thereby we examine the quality of the beliefs informing the decision, the available options & try to envisage the future based on our choices.

Nature has hard-wired us for bias enabling us to make quick general assumptions as a survival benefit.

However this leads to bias and tribalism.

Being aware of these 3 common biases when seeking opinion from others, can help you filter these out.
What You See is All There Is (WYSIATI)

We assume what we see is more common that it actually is.

This is why we x10 the perceived incidence of violent death due to news articles vs x1/1000 the more common causes such as stroke/MI/diabetes.

Ask - what am I not seeing?

Online search algorithms will show you articles you want to see. This will keep your thinking contained with a bubble.

This is known as a Filter Bubble.

Surgical Decision Making Heuristics 🧵

I estimate a #neurosurgery on call doubles the usual 3000 decisions we make each day.

A "razor" cuts away what is unnecessary and simplifies decision making.

Here are 10 surgical razors to sharpen your decisions: Image
Occam’s Razor: (The OG Razor)

"Plurality must never be posited without necessity." If the patient with the enlarging CSDH has worsening falls, its likely the CSDH and not the new medicine they’ve started. Image
Hickam’s Dictum:

"A man can have as many diseases as he damn well pleases.” The patient with the enlarging CSDH may also have had a stroke causing their falls.

Occam's > Hickam's in my experience. Image

Elon Musk tweeted about 50 cognitive biases everyone should learn.

It’s a thought-provoking list.

But the infographic (see below) is difficult to digest.

#neurosurgery #decisionmaking Image
Decision-making is a key but under-discussed component of neurosurgery.

I’ve re-summarized the 50 cognitive biases Musk recommends to learn.

Each has it’s own neurosurgery example drawn from experience.

Today I’ll share the first 25, tomorrow the second half.
First, a quick note about cognitive biases.

What are they?

Why is knowing about them crucial?

All humans make systematic errors in thinking—hurting our judgment.

Being aware of cognitive biases will make you less susceptible to them.

Let’s get started.
