@POTUS@WhiteHouse I will talk about how this administration's record of lies, data deletion, censorship & attacks on science has utterly eviscerated the mission defined in the Federal Data Strategy:
My comments regarding the record of this @WhiteHouse: not only did they fail to engage the American public or co-create a new #OpenGov plan, but they have censored data, cast doubt on data & scientists, censored scientists, & robbed us of shared facts.
This is EXACTLY what happened in 2017 & 2018 in workshops to "co-create" the US Plan for @OpenGovPart: #opengov watchdogs & advocates, & journalists weren't included -- or didn't participate – which means folks who know the truth about data & transparency aren't part of the mix.
@opengovpart Surreal to folks experts talk about federal agencies pursuing "evidence-based policymaking": e-pluribusunum.org/2019/01/15/pre… when this administration denies climate change, refuses to follow science to suppress the pandemic, demonizes immigrants, & strips environmental protections.
As this letter outlines, the path @DCPSChancellor has chosen for reopening @dcpublicschools is deeply flawed, both in process & outcomes. @MayorBowser & @CouncilOfDC members, please read this.
Scrap the custodial CARES model. Work with our principals to build something better.
Dear @mayorbowser:
How did @colbycollege open safely? Universal masks, outdoor classes, & bi-weekly testing.
Testing symptomatic folks won’t be enough: Test students & staff before opening, & weekly.
Ventilate, test air, open data.
Don’t gag principals. washingtonpost.com/local/educatio…
WOW. @HuffPost@highline has published one of the best features on the disappearance of data in the Trump administration & its impact: highline.huffingtonpost.com/article/disapp… Bravo. Deep, detailed breakdown of the tragic degradation of one of the USA’s precious public resources: self-knowledge.
March 2017: “The ways that the Trump administration could mess with government data remains the same: budget cuts that could reduce quality, frequency of release or even collection, & alteration or miscommunication of research or statistical information.” sunlightfoundation.com/2017/03/10/the…
2020: “The erosion of data across the federal government is particularly insidious because it’s relatively invisible to the public at large. Often, the only people who know the value of these sets of numbers are those who work with them daily.”
5 questions journalists need to answer covering Trump:
Can what appears to have happened be confirmed?
If so, was it unprecedented?
Is this recent act of governance normal by the usual standards?
Is what happened a threat to transparency — or democracy? politico.com/magazine/story…
1) Can what appears to have happened be confirmed?
Would @markmeadows say “we are not going to control a war” & let soldiers die?
We aren’t going to control flooding, & let families drown?
Not to respond to a blizzard or fire, & let Americans freeze or burn?
Unacceptable dereliction of duty not to do what we can to save lives.
It’s mourning in America: 224,819 dead. Coronavirus is spreading rapidly. ICUs filling up.
Governors need to act now to #flattenthecurve: covidactnow.org
If we don’t, hospitals will be overwhelmed, & more people will die.
Mandate masks. They work: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
1) @Twitter & @Facebook don’t have to host speech that misinforms Americans about the risk of a deadly virus: washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/… They could mask it with facts first. 2) Americans need & deserve so much better from a @POTUS:
Twitter has now masked Trump’s tweet & explained why (it violated rules about spreading misleading & potentially harmful information related to #COVID19”) but also *removed* a tweet.
