Tang et al 2006 review: Risk of death by #suicide at least doubled in #ChronicPain patients. Ideation is 3 times more common; lifetime prevalence of about 20%. 8 risks for suicidality in chronic pain were identified, half are physical.

Tang et al: 8 risks for #suicide in #ChronicPain patients: 4 are physical, including type, intensity & duration of pain & sleep-onset insomnia co-occuring with #pain; 4 are psychological. CP is a neurological suicide risk AND a psychological risk.

Ashrafioun et al (2019): #Pain intensity significantly associated w/ #suicide attempts. "Moderate to severe pain intensity in the year before initiating pain specialty services may be a useful indicator of suicide risk."

Breslau, et al. #Migraine is a risk for #suicide, even in people without a mental health disorder. Odds ratio for suicide attempt in migraine w/ aura is 3.0.

Breslau 2012: #Migraine & severe #headache increase a person’s risk of #suicide 4.43 to 6.2 times, even w/o comorbid depression.

🔴Headache severity at baseline predicted attempt: difference of 1 standard deviation in pain score increased the risk of suicide attempt by 79%.

@headsUPmigraine Fishbain et al: 24.85% w/ acute #pain & 34.9% w/ CP reported a history of wanting to die; the risk for such lifetime passive suicidal ideation was 1.38 (acute), 1.93 (CP).

5.83% of people w/ acute, 9.38% w/ CP reported frequent active ideation. Risk=1.8 acute 2.97 CP.

@headsUPmigraine Fishbain: 7.06% & 7.92% reported having a suicide plan; the risk was 4.26 (acute), 4.78 (CP) times that of healthy people. 14.11% (acute) and 20.53% (CP)--one-fifth--had attempted suicide; the risk was 2.23 and 3.25 times higher than healthy controls.
