🚨BREAKING: Good news! #Moderna says preliminary data show that its #coronavirus vaccine was 94.5% effective in protecting study volunteers from #COVID19.

Of 95 people who got #COVID19 with symptoms, 90 had placebo and only 5 had Moderna’s #vaccine.

Moderna also says that the preliminary data show that its #vaccine is safe, but they still await longer-term safety results that will be available in late November.🙏

Although preliminary—and we will need to see data published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal—Moderna’s results “are very im­pres­sive and very en­cour­ag­ing and ex­cit­ing re­sults,” per Dr. Fauci.

If all goes well, Moderna’s #vaccine could be authorized by FDA next month!

‼️Dr. Fauci: "Doses could be available to high-risk individuals by the end of December. The data are striking, really quite impressive." He doesn't want to get ahead of the FDA, but believes it's likely #Moderna will get emergency use authorization.

Like Pfizer’s #vaccine trial, these preliminary data from Moderna’s #coronavirus vaccine trial were reviewed by an INDEPENDENT panel of scientific experts, who are the only ones to have access to unblinded data (they know who go placebo vs #vaccine).

Very encouraged by the data!

IMPORTANT: these data are preliminary. We will need to confirm the data and whether the #vaccine:

▶️is safe longer term
▶️can protect those with weaker immune systems (elderly)
▶️can protect against ASYMPTOMATIC infection—these people can still spread the #coronavirus to others

Moderna’s #vaccine works similarly to @pfizer’s (>90% effective per early data).

Both vaccines use mRNA genetic material encoding the #coronavirus spike protein. After injection, the body’s cells make the protein➡️stimulates immunity.
