[Thread] 1. 80 000 Johnson & Johnson #CovidVaccines will land in SA today (weather permitting, etc). Where will they go? @bhekisisa_MG’s @KeMohale made an interactive map of the 16 sites and number of doses each site will receive. tabsoft.co/2N979kd
2. The 80 000 J&J doses will go to 16 sites (2 sites in each province, except for the Northern Cape, which will have 1 - one of the Free State’s sites, Pelonomi Hospital, isn’t ready yet and will be phased in when it is. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
3. Who will get vaccinated first? #HealthWorkers. Why? They deal with #COVID19 patients + are the most vulnerable to infection. Everyone needs to register on @HealthZA’s system. Only 28% of SA’s 1.25 million workers had done so by 1pm on Tue. Register: vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za
4. When will the first #HealthWorker be vaccinated? If all goes well, says @LindaGailBekker, who is co-leading a study SA will conduct with the J&J jabs, “round about mid-day on Wednesday”. The other leader of the study is the @MRCza’s Glenda Gray. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
5. So how well does the J&J jab work? Research has shown it provides 85% protection against severe #COVID19 (the type of COVID that makes you end up in hospital or leads to death) in South Africa — that includes disease caused by the new variant, #501YV2. bit.ly/2N83LWE
6. But for less severe forms of #COVID, the J&J jab’s protection isn’t as good as against severe disease. It provides 57% protection against moderate to severe disease in SA, including disease caused by the new variant #501YV2. We explain why in our story: bit.ly/3rXrAPY
7. Interesting finding about the J&J jab: While the protection it provides against moderate/severe disease in SA is lower than in other countries (as the jab is less effective @ #501YV2), it provides the same level of protection against severe disease in SA as in other countries.
8. So why is SA conducting a study with J&J jabs if we already have data that shows how well it works? This is the quickest way to get the jab to health workers — getting it approved for research use takes a few days, for wider use it could take months. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
9. How many more J&J jabs will SA receive? Up to 500 000 for research purposes (we’re getting them for free), and 9 million that we have to pay for. There’s also talk about a possible 20 million more, but it hasn’t been officially confirmed. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
10. When will the other J&J jabs arrive? Free jabs: we’ll get 3 batches of 80 000 every 2 wks, then 1 batch of 60 000. Once we’ve used those jabs, J&J will give SA another 200 000. The 9 million? When there’s stock + when @SAHPRA1 has approved it for use. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
11. Why does it take so long to approve the J&J jab for wider roll-out? @SAHPRA1 has to review loads of data to ensure the #CovidVaccine is as safe and effective as Johnson & Johnson says it is. We explain it in more detail in our story. bit.ly/3rXrAPY

The latest stats from @HealthZA on how many #HealthWorkers have been infected and have died of #Covid in SA and why we need vaccinate them so urgently:
* Number of infections: 40 000
* Hospitalisations: 6 473
* Deaths: 663 Image
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 100% effective in protecting vaccinated people against #COVID-related death. If all #HealthWorkers are vaccinated, #COVID deaths are therefore unlikely among such workers. Image
The J&J vaccine provides 85% protection against severe #COVID in SA, so it can also help to dramatically reduce hospitalisations among #HealthWorkers. (We've had more than 6000 health workers in hospital because of COVID so far).

[Thread] 1. Would criminals steal and falsify #CovidVaccines in #Africa? It has started. On 19 November, South Africa received its first freight of falsified #Covid19 “vaccines”. bit.ly/3qcHXYm
2. The falsified #CovidVaccines were found in a warehouse in Germiston. Police tracked the freight from OR Tambo and found prefilled syringes in boxes with Chinese labels. There were strong signs they were going to be sold as genuine #CovidVaccines. bit.ly/3qcHXYm
3. Interpol says the falsified "jabs" had been advertised for sale on a Chinese social media app, WeChat. They had been imported from Singapore as “cosmetic injections”. Two people have been arrested. Police are trying to trace if any were released in SA. bit.ly/3qcHXYm

[Thread] 1. SA will be getting Pfizer jabs to use in #VaccineRolloutSA. Those jabs need to be stored in special freezers at -70 degrees Celsius. We don't have many of those freezers. So how will SA cope?
2. #Mkhize: Pfizer is sending its #CovidVaccines to SA in packaging that allows for the jabs to remain stable for a certain period until they get to a freezer. We've also had companies offering us access to the special freezers required so we can store the jabs safely.
3. Here's more background on the challenges with maintaining the cold chain with Pfizer jabs (some of these challenges have now been addressed with packaging that keeps the jabs at the right temp and more freezers that have become available). bit.ly/3q8UFHs

#Mkhize: The process of Aspen (in SA) filling and packing Johnson&Johnson #CovidVaccines is going well. We anticipate they will have their first batch ready in March. They need to hold manufactured stock for a month (safety procedure) before it can be released.
#Mkhize: Aspen says they want to serve SA and make Johnson&Johnson vaccines available to the country. But it's J&J who decides if, and how many, of the vaccines packaged by Aspen in SA our country can get.
#Mkhize: J&J has told me they're committed to making their #CovidVaccines available to SA. (On Sunday, principal investigator Glenda Gray said J&J will make an announcement about this later this week).

#Mkhize: [Thread] We want to use the best #CovidVaccine for SA. The #501YV2 variant has impacted on the efficacy of jabs. The results showing the impact on the #astrazenecavaccine only became available on Fri. We now know it doesn't prevent mild/moderate #COVID19 disease in SA.
#Mkhize: Government's process of procuring the #AstraZenecaVaccine started before the new results on lack of efficacy in South Africa became available.
#Mkhize: The public has concerns about the expiry date of the #AstraZenecaVaccine. The vaccine has not expired yet. The doses would have been used up by the April expiry date with our original #VaccineforSouthAfrica roll-out strategy.

Madhi: When researchers looked at protection that the #AstraZeneca jab provided against mild to moderate #Covid19 disease, there was considerable protection against the original form of the virus. But the antibodies induced by the jab didn't work nearly as well for #501YV2.
There was very little difference between the protection the vaccine provided for people infected with #501YV2 and the placebo group (the group that was infected with a saline solution instead of the #AstraZeneca vaccine).
Madhi's team found that the #AstraZeneca vaccine provided almost no protection against the #501YV2 variant, also known as the #B1351 variant. There is hope: the Johnson&Johnson (Jansen) jab provides 89% protection against severe #Covid19 caused by #501YV2.
