WORRIED—NYC’s native variant is now concerning Fauci—it has some potential for trouble. 735 cases of #B1526 variant that emerged in New York City have now been identified in US, including 585 in the last 2 weeks—it is now found in 15 states.🧵#COVID19 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
2)“It’s not particularly happy news,” said Michel Nussenzweig, an immunologist. “But just knowing about it is good because then we can perhaps do something about it.”
Nussenzweig said he was more worried about variant in New York than one in California.

3) The variant, known scientifically as B.1.526, likely started off in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, Anthony Fauci said in a Monday news briefing. It is one of five concerning variants now being tracked nationally by health officials.
4) “Recent research suggests B.1.526 needs to be closely watched “for its ability to evade both monoclonal antibody and, to a certain extent, the vaccine-induced antibody,” said Fauci,

“It’s something we take very, very seriously,” Fauci said.
5) “The variant may have arisen in November in immunocompromised people who remained sick despite treatment over a long period of time, according to recent research. Fauci said immunocompromised people should get vaccinated. “absolutely, yes,” he said.
6) “Absolutely, yes, because that’s not only important for them for their own health. But that could be the breeding ground of the variant and the emergence of a variance.”
7) Other experts said the sudden appearance of coronavirus variants was worrying.
“Given involvement of E484K or S477N, combined with the fact that the New York region has a lot of standing immunity from the spring wave, this is definitely one to watch,” said Kristian Andersen
8) Dr. Ho's team reported in January that the monoclonal antibodies made by Eli Lilly, and one of the monoclonal antibodies in a cocktail made by Regeneron, are powerless against the variant identified in South Africa 🇿🇦 (with E484K). biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
9) Notably, “ #B1351 is markedly more resistant to neutralization by convalescent plasma (~11-33 fold) & vaccinee sera (~6.5-8.6 fold). B.1.351 & emergent variants with similar spike mutations present new challenges for mAb therapy & threaten the efficacy of current vaccines.”
10) back to current NYC variant—“At this level of cases, with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained,” Walensky said. “These variants are a very real threat to our people and our progress.”
11) “Last week, researchers said #B1526 was quickly gaining ground in the city.
Anthony West, of CalTech, first raised the possibility that some portion of vaccine-induced immune response “might be less effective because of the mutations” in the New York variant.
12) “It’s not just the total number that have been sequenced, it’s also the mutations that it has, and how widespread it is,” Armstrong said.
13) “Whether the variant is more contagious or has worrisome features is unknown, the CDC’s Armstrong said. One possibility is that the New York strain is taking off because of random “founder effects -- basically a particular virus being in the right place at the right time,”
14) Rochelle Walensky, the chief of the CDC, again warned that Covid-19 cases appeared to have halted their decline, leveling off at what is still a high level.

She said variants and the case load could combine to reignite the pandemic before vaccinations take hold.

⚠️KIDS ages 5-12 now the *highest positive prevalence age group* for #COVID19 in England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in February (not previously in Jan), despite lockdown.

➡️ Higher odds of COVID for workers in: healthcare, transport, & education, school, nursery or childcare. 🧵

2) there is definitely something going on with the #B117 variant (where it is fully dominant in 🇬🇧) and kids. This new weird pediatric trend has been now seen in Italy 🇮🇹 Israel 🇮🇱 Denmark 🇩🇰 and many other places. Italy’s leadership sounded the alarms recently about B117 & kids.
3) We should have seen this Italian village where 60% of the cases being in primary school kids as a canary in the coal mine signal. I was very worried at the time...

The flu killed almost 200 kids last flu season. This year—just 1.

Reason? Masks and distancing. The result has been: only about 0.1% of flu tests are coming back positive, versus 20-30% at this time in other years.

Silver lining of #COVID19 mitigation.

2) “I think that that obliteration of the flu epidemic, which was seen globally, tells us that the way that influenza is transmitted from one person to another might really have been impacted by the use of masks, more than anything else,” said Flor Munoz.
3) “Influenza is expected to come roaring back next fall and winter if most coronavirus restrictions have lifted by then, experts warn. Because children commonly spread the flu, reopened schools and day-care centers may contribute significantly to the rebound.”

NEW—CDC warns #COVID19 is "on the cusp" of potential resurgence, with cases & deaths rising. Highly-transmissible #B117 variant can "hijack our successes", as fatigue leads precautions being "flagrantly ignored".

Been warning for over a month. So tired.
2) The #B117 is serious. It is not only 40-60% more contagious, but also more severe. And it also might be causing kids outbreaks worldwide. Italy 🇮🇹 is just one. Israel too.
3) If you think #B117 is bad—wait until the #P1 variant from Brazil 🇧🇷 infects the world. We have to stop this cycle of surges and mutations.

Vaccine & #LongCovid benefit?

“I started getting texts/calls: hey, are patients with long COVID reporting that they’re feeling better after the vaccine’? When he started talking with patients: “It’s not 100%, but it does seem like to be ~1/3”. 🧵#COVID19 theverge.com/2021/3/2/22308… Image
2) “Early reports hint that people with persistent symptoms may improve after getting vaccinated. Information is still limited & largely anecdotal — but if pattern holds, it could help understand more about why symptoms of #COVID19 persist in some people, & offer path to relief.”
3) “Many of Griffin’s patients who improved had significant side effects after their first shot of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. That’s common in people who’ve had COVID-19 before—they already have some level of antibodies, so the 1st shot acts more like a 2nd booster.”

⚠️BRAZIL COVID EMERGENCY—Entire 🇧🇷 is now “Manaus”. 1700+ deaths in 24 hours, ICUs critical.

📌#P1 🇧🇷 variant is ~2x-2.5x more transmissible, says @obscovid19br

📌17 state capitals ICUs >80% full

2) Brazil is becoming an enormous Manaus" - @MiguelNicolelis
3) One group puts #P1 at an astoundingly high 2x more transmissibility.

Experiences from Manaus - the Amazonian city hit hard by the P.1 variant - suggest it could be up to twice as transmissible as earlier Covid there, the first detailed study suggests.

If kids under age 6 can wear masks 102 years ago in the last great pandemic, then kids today can too.

PASS IT ON. #COVID19 #MaskUp #schoolmasks
2) We now have major outbreaks in kids worldwide from #B117. See thread 🧵
3) This is the best example of what happens when kids don’t mask in schools....
