I don't call Fauci a hero - have criticized him. Birx is no victim. She & her scarves can go away ASAP.

>500,000 dead. My mother included.

#Leadership means something.
Those unfit for leadership or public office, unable to meet demands of the job, can & should leave the post.
There are two choices:

1- We have one definition of leadership & ethics. We don't make excuses just cuz she's a woman

2- Women have it so tough that we should use a double standard cuz, maybe, she handles media like a girl

Media is PART OF the job

nbcnews.com/politics/donal…
Look, if you want to be a scientist & just do the work, great. There thousands of non-profits, universities, aid agencies to do #publichealth and #policy.

If you seek out the limelight, guess what, you will have public accountability for when you betray science. Sounds...fair
So should we withhold #accountability for female #leadership? #Ethics optional?

Think of all the times she returned library books on time. And yeah she got a A+ in biochem, right? And she's nice to puppies.

Some people just have a bad day, right?

triblive.com/opinion/leonar…
Opposite. When you are being leader-sheep you are oppressing everyone else below you too. Tell me, was Dr. Birx encouraging anyone reporting to her to act with any more integrity or courage than herself? Compare to this movement on #ethics in #AI: bbc.com/news/technolog…
Women like Dr. Birx with her famed scarf collection

are the sheep's clothing for the wolf

She uses her credentials and elegant look to make someone like Trump more palatable.

She was deliberately justifying USING her medical degree to make nice-nice.

theintercept.com/2020/04/24/qua…
There is a reason women get hired to certain roles - one might have credentials but that is not actually the reaons for hire.

Women provide optics, EQ, soften the "strong man" and prevents people from feeling the guilt.

Make nice-nice.

nytimes.com/video/us/polit…
There was a very clear agenda that overrode science. Birx was of this same background. The "bleach" solution was sent by an evangelical church leader selling the cure on TV.

washingtonpost.com/national/healt…
We knew this anti-vaxx history back in 2016. Why is everyone acting like the anti-science thinking came out of left field.

businessinsider.com/trump-vaccines…
There were headlines like this, again, in 2016. We could predict just how any kind of health crisis would go: statnews.com/2016/11/30/don…
This is still having an impact now - Republicans are waiting for Trump to endorse it.

washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/…
Based on her pattern of behavior around Trump, how would Dr. Birx react if a direct report, a minority physician, were falsely accused for doing his job to give vaccines with scarce resources?

1-Speak up?
2-Look away?
3-Throw under the bus?

lawandcrime.com/legal-analysis…
Who died? BIPOC. Elders. Disabled. Low income. Etc

Anyone in #publichealth knew EXACTLY who was dying

To some:
= the expendable )some humans are more valuable dead than alive)
= Social Security will be a bit less squeezed

->Birx rubberstamped this

vanityfair.com/news/2020/03/d…
The women who demurely, discretely, elegantly, while perfectly coiffed and with the perfect scarf draped

cover up ugliness

is exactly why what allowed some women advance
while leaving behind others

how WW won the right to vote in America

Birx suddenly found her voice and is doing a reputation management tour.

Is she speaking up on voter suppression with the previously muted voice she suddenly found? No.

She failed Americans
But she served her boss tho - so maybe she did do her job?

cnn.com/videos/health/…
You can't have your cake & eat it too, ladies & femmes.

Is it unfair? Yes

It is utterly unfair I lost my mother from preventable pandemic cuz some docs simple confuse leadership wth leader-sheep

Use the voice you have to SAVE LIVES
Be a doctor first
Stop playing victim
As a woman in leadership & public health, I have left jobs I was darn good

if someone like Birx outranked me & enforced a culture of silence & covering up

if my choice: to cut my integrity down to match hers or leave?

I leave bosses like Birx
Birx is no helpless child
Yes, it is hard & costly leaving bad bosses - lose academic work, benefits, pension.

Yes, ethics is costly.

Who, in this pandemic, still thinks life is fair and has a sense of entitlement?
Amy Cooper types do

They are your boss, neighbor, teacher

thecut.com/2020/05/why-am…
“Dr. Deborah Birx, has joined an air-cleaning company that built its business, in part, on technology that is now banned in California due to health hazards...

.. in a footrace to capture some of the $193 billion in federal funding to schools.”

Please think about how she acted for so many years in African countries. Look at the job she took after. What is the best fit line?

Was she acting that differently before?

Or was she used to low/zero accountability and zero transparency

...when it was not American lives?
As someone who has worked in #globalhealth, I can tell you that there are attitudes/practices towards those in other countries that do not meet standards in the U.S.

Not all of it is just resources, trained personnel, or local politics.

gh.bmj.com/content/5/8/e0…
As for local politics, that is often a self fulfilling prophecy. If one comes with a “savior”/superior belief, believes other cultures lack ability or values to self govern
one often installs or rewards “strongman” dictators for expediency

Churchill is oft quoted.

Doctors, especially female doctors, are rushing to defend Dr. Birx

“male-centered” world is problem = latest knee jerk “feminist” defense

Men cause female doctors to not speak on scientific facts in public?
Huh?

Why isn’t female doctors saving lives of WOC part of “feminism”?
The same doctors who will jump on the “racism!” bandwagon vs @JAMA_current if vs a *man*

will rush to cover up for a woman/peer who *operationalizes* structural racism

The face of structural & medical racism is female

And women will defend women rather than be held accountable
@DrJRMarcelin published this in @JAMA_current. Women of color, specifically black women, need to be leading the conversation on #COVID19 in America because when #publichealth systems fail on top of medical racism, you get exactly the results we got.

@meganranney do you stand by “Birx became inextricably tied to the harmful decisions of her negligent, disastrously ignorant boss” in your @CNN defense of Dr. Birx?

Is this ageism & ableism cuz of “male-centered”
or is Birx’s female doctor brain capable of independent thought?
At what point will #WomenInMedicine and #womeninstem believe that women are full adults

who are responsible accountable for our own words?

I know it is soooooo scary to be around men 😱

and I guess some of us are so petrified we can’t figure out #SciComm ...as scientists? ImageImage
The child-woman or wilting woman of smelling salts is a Western construct

Keep me out of your opinion, @meganranney - this minority & WOC holds Birx accountable as a scientist, physician, public servant, & woman who lost a >50 y/o mother to #COVID19

Survival?
My mother is dead Image

Just stop these tiny violins. As a woman of color who lost my mother to the pandemic, as a licensed physician, and as a public servant, I can say it is EXACTLY women like Dr. Birx who drive out women like me from “her” turf & prematurely end the lives of women like my mother.
You don’t have to buy an assault rifle and show up to shoot someone’s mother to have blood on your hands.
Bureaucrats like Dr. Birx has blood on their hands no different from as if she did this. You can kill, passively, while wrapped in an Hermès scarf.

usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
@JeromeAdamsMD this is an example of bureaucrats & policies causing death

Perhaps before implying seeking accountability for the policy-driven deaths of so many mothers & loved ones

is “anti-feminist”
learn history
bureaucrats kill women & men of color

When I look at reactions to Birx, several faculty defending her
deeply concerns me how strong the Colonial mind control still is in South Asian women
some of whom are born and raised here

South Asians: Look at anti-Asian hate
You are not white
You can & will go under the bus
I fully expect WW to see selves in Birx & close ranks. This apology piece, as if Birx were a naive child, unable to operate in a “male-centered” world, typical

cnn.com/2021/03/28/opi…

This is American feminism
It is for wives and daughters of those who “belong”
But play victim
“Male-centered”

appropriates a term
used by black women

“Centered on women” is not the goal.
Which women?

Get PAST respectability

We already have failed feminism thar centers on WW and WW are unhappy while BIPOC remain paid worse or the “mammy”

Trump was propped up by everyone standing besides him. Birx has blood on her hands.

“Leaders”, sadly, often sadly, women, like her are exactly why I left public service. Why would I rubber stamp death?

Birx and others like her are responsible for my mother’s #COVID19 death.
Compare Birx, who is on a reputation management tour, to a true #publichealth #servantleadership role model like Dr. Hasan Gokal

Is Birx defending him, her peer?

No, she’s playing victim exactly per the playbook of American-style feminism.

khou.com/article/news/h…
It was evangelical “science” that ruled the last administration - Birx included.

Where was Birx’s loyalty?

To vetted, verified facts and preserving human life?

I judge by actions and outcomes, not by “narrative” spun after a change of administration.
