Short #thread on some of the valuable contributions of Mahadji Scindia to re-establish Hindu policies at Delhi in 1789.

1789 was the 1st centenary year of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Punyatithi. So, these events assume a special significance too.
2.
1789, Jan: Mahadji Scindia re-acquired Delhi, and incorporated it into the Maratha confederacy. He remarks in a letter:

"Just like Satara, Delhi is also now our Sansthan. To put it in order is upto us."

[Sansthan = Semi-autonomous state within empire/confederacy]

3.
In the early 1789, Nana Fadnavis (influential minister of Peshwa) wrote to Mahadji Scindia:

"Restoration of the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir is appropriate for Hindu Dharma..."
4.
"...We have to do this, it will carve our names on the Hindu (minds), serve the State, & increase prestige"

#KashiVishwanath #Kashi #Hindutva #Temples
4.
1789, Sep 4: Mahadji Scindia told Shah Alam to issue a firman *banning cow slaughter all over his Mughal territories.*

The firman notes: "Human & animal lives are dependent on the cow... We are banning all cow slaughter throughout our lands..."
5.
"... No village, town, settlement should indulge in cow slaughter... Violators will be punished by the Badshah"

#GauRaksha
6.
1790, May: Mahadji Scindia told Shah Alam to prepare grants to give Mathura-Vrindavan holy places to Marathas, away from Muslim control.

1790, Aug: The holy places were finally granted by Shah Alam to Marathas.
7.
It is said that if it wasn't for Mahadji Scindia's death in 1794, Mathura would've eventually been made the northern Capital of Maratha empire by him!

Kalingan Prince Vijaya was the first Sinhalese king of Sri Lanka. He ruled Sri Lanka in the 6th-century BCE.

Kalingans further established a kingdom in the far-off Maldives Islands before 3rd century BCE !

This is concrete testimony of the early sea-faring people of Odisha.
3.
Ptolemy's work of ~150 CE - "Geography" - mentions the Kalinga trade with *Far-East*.

*Kalinga-Roman* maritime trade flourished as well, judging from the findings of Shishupalgarh excavations.

Maratha & Mysore armies started modernising in the 1760s & 70s. British accounts state, that Marathas had rocket technology before Mysore's Tipu Sultan.

Maratha rockets 'annoyed' the British in the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775), whereas British faced Mysore rockets in 1792. Image

Modern manufacturing processes, training and logistics required a substantial financial cost.

In the 1780s, Mahadji Scindia consolidated his hold over north India. He hired Benoit de Boigne, a Frenchman, to reorganize his finances and training.

This is the first of the 3-thread-series on Gunpowder Use in India. It'll focus on the period upto Mughal Empire.

#MilitaryHistory #Hindutva #Gunpowder
2.
The earliest recipes of burning mixtures are from ~800 CE China, India. The first explosives made their appearance ~1200 CE.

The Mongol invasions of China carried this technology west across the Steppe into Central Asia and north India.
3.
We have a record from the time of the Delhi sultan Jalaludin Khilji (late 1200s) about the ‘hawai’, a rocket that could only be powered by gunpowder.

The other route into India is seaborne. Chinese were using cannons on ships since the early 1400s & traded with Indian ports.

#Thread on the Council of Ministers of Chhatrapatī Śivājī Mahārāj - The Aṣṭapradhāna Maṇḍaḻa

The Aṣṭapradhāna Maṇḍaḻa was the 'Cabinet of Eight Ministers' of Hindavī Swarājya

#Hindutva #AdministrativeHistory #chhatrapatishivajimaharaj Image
2.
Chhatrapatī Śivājī Mahārāj sought to modernise & formalise the governance of the Hindavī Swarājya.

Feudalism was rampant, which was reined in with the wise *separation of the revenue-collection, & military roles* of the administration.

#Feudalism ImageImage
3.
The Aṣṭapradhāna Maṇḍaḻa was formalised at the time of coronation, although, there exist instances where Chhatrapatī Śivājī used to consult several such ministers on earlier important occasions as well.
