Have received a shocking electricity/utility bill of late?

We’ve heard from thousands of Albertans dealing with these massive bills at a time when they can least afford them.

In response, we’re calling for the following four actions:

1/5 #ableg
➡️ Provide direct consumer relief to two-thirds of Albertans (those earning up to $55,000 annually as an individual or $102,500 per couple). 2/5 #ableg
We want to model the relief program after the COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program offered in Ontario, which provided customers $750 in support both their electricity and natural gas bills. Consumers can apply for relief on both bills separately 3/5 #ableg
➡️ Reinstate the Regulated Rate Option cap for electricity at 6.8 cents per kilowatt hour.

➡️ Reinstate the Utility Payment Deferral Program, which allowed consumers and businesses to defer payment of bills but which ended last June.
4/5 #ableg
➡️ Ban all utility shutoffs for Alberta homes until the pandemic ends and public health orders are lifted.

Do you think @jkenney should step up and help Albertans with these ridiculous utility bills? 5/5 #AbLeg

The Alberta NDP is renewing its call for a full public inquiry into the tragic COVID-19 outbreaks at Cargill and other processing plants. 1/6 #AbLeg #abhealth

cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
We are deeply disturbed by newly released documents that show UCP Agriculture Minister Devin Dreeshen was notified by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw on April 18, 2020, that two CFIA workers had contracted COVID-19 inside the High River-area plant. 2/6 #ableg
That same day, mere hours after receiving this disturbing information, Dreeshen, Hinshaw and Labour Minister Jason Copping held a town hall meeting with Cargill workers and told them their workplace was safe. 3/6 #ableg #abhealth

The UCP government has passed Budget 2021.

It fails to deliver a plan to create jobs, diversify Alberta’s economy, or specify how it will spend billions of dollars in contingency funding.

Budget 2021’s signature Alberta Jobs Now strategy commits the government to getting $62 million out the door in the next four business days, but the program has yet to be launched.

(2/8)
And while the budget promises “sector strategies,” they remain under construction with no estimate for additional job creation.

We are calling for necessary actions to get to the bottom of the senseless, tragic deaths and illnesses at the Olymel plant in Red Deer. #ableg #abpoli #yql #covid #covid19 #covid19ab #abcovid19 #abcovid
(1/7)
First, we are calling for an immediate public inquiry into the mishandling of the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel plant by both the UCP Government and the corporation that operates the facility.
(2/7)
This coincides with the inquiry call we’ve already made regarding the 1,500 cases and two deaths at the Cargill plant in High River as well as the 650 cases and one death of a worker at JBS in Brooks.

🧵Alberta’s NDP and students are calling for sweeping changes to Budget 202 to ensure that both the post-secondary system and the students who learn within it are equipped to drive a diversified economic recovery. #ableg #abpse
Budget 2021 cuts post-secondary by $135 million this year. Since taking office, when population and inflation are factored in, the UCP has cut $690 million, nearly 23%. ‼️
As well, in the proposed budget alone, the UCP will tack on $106 million in increased tuition fees charged to students for a total tuition increase of $387 million since taking office. They have also cut nearly 1,500 full-time equivalent post-secondary jobs to date. 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫

Jason Kenney and the UCP did not have a plan for women to succeed in the workforce before the pandemic — and this budget shows us that they don’t have a plan now. 1/12 #ableg
There is no job creation plan for women.

Economists, businesses and governments across the country are emphasizing the value that women bring to the economy like never before, and they’re doing it with tangible action. 2/12 #ableg
Jason Kenney is ignoring that modern economies and businesses are stronger when women are involved when he says things like Gender-Based Analysis Plus and intersectionality are “kooky” ideas. 3/12 #ableg
