Two recently discovered #coronaviruses may have jumped from cats/dogs and pigs to people. These are not, as headlines claim, "new viruses" -- rather, they were found in samples taken from past pneumonia outbreaks. Good overview: the-scientist.com/news-opinion/t…

2/ In 2017-18 in Sarawak, Malaysia a strange pneumonia epidemic hit, hospitalizing children.
Recent analysis of stored 2017 nasal swabs led to discovery of a #coronavirus that is a chimera, genetically from cats & dogs. It infected some children.

3/ In 2014 in a school in Haiti children developed high fevers. Recent analysis of samples from those kids revealed a previously unknown pig #coronavirus .
The spike protein of the virus appears to have adapted to human cells.

4/Because of #COVID19 #pandemic researchers thought to pull old samples out of freezers & screen them for possible #coronaviruses. No doubt, more will be found as such screening expands.
Take-home from this: We don't need an exotic explanation for COVID: plenty such viruses lurk.
