BREAKING: 立場新聞 reporting HKUST's Ching Kwan Lee resigned, after having been accused of directly participating in & supporting the #HongKongProtests, is being pressured to turn herself in #香港 兩名科大學者被指離職 李靜君:已約滿離任 成名: 仲喺科大thestandnews.page.link/jnwdM1DoLXUx4y…
#HKUST has issued a statement saying that it supports #academicfreedom but that all of its employees must strictly abide by #HongKong law; and that disciplinary charges have not been filed against her. #香港
Former #HongKong CE & Vice Chair of the Nat'l Committee of the CPCC CY Leung has demanded that she "surrender herself as soon as possible, lest the police launch an investigation" on the basis of a Sing Tao article alleging her involvement in the #HongKongProtests #香港
The Sing Tao article, published in March, alleges that Ching Kwan Lee stated-- during an academic conference in #Taiwan-- "a lot of things I’ve done are defined as illegal under #HongKong law;" CY Leung is attempting to use the article as evidence #academicfreedom #香港 #台灣
If true, this is an outrageous attack on #academicfreedom and #freespeech in #HongKong & #Taiwan against a world-renowned sociologist, a deeply valued colleague in @AASAsianStudies, drawing on an unsubstantiated statement taken entirely out of context at a conference #台灣 #香港
These allegations have been building for some time: pro-establishment Wen Wei Po accused Ching Kwan Lee of "using the cloak of '#academicfreedom'" to support an agenda of #HongKong independence in March & branded her as "yellow" & "black violent" #香港 wenweipo.com/a/202103/18/AP…
文匯報 points to Ching Kwan Lee's sociological analysis of the #HongKongProtests as a "revolutionary moment" in her academic work in order accuse her of supporting #HongKong independence; and of her fieldwork-- which is based on participant observation-- as political subversion
This is a well-recognised & well-respected methodological approach; and her analysis of the #HongKongProtests using this approach, during which she is alleged to have worn a yellow safety vest marking her off as a non-combatant-- is being cited to call for a police investigation
The 文匯報 refers to her research reports from the field as "so-called 'scholarly analysis'" 所謂的「學術分析」that is actually the work of a " 'black violent scholar' spreading theories of "#HongKong independence gangsterism" 黑暴學者...傳播「港獨黑暴」理論 #香港
The March Sing Tao 星島 article that CY Leung is using to launch a police investigation against Ching Kwan Lee criticises her for saying that "#HongKong is a global city," and that, as such, "HK belongs to the world" #香港 科大教授認曾參與違法示威 std.stheadline.com/daily/article/…
She is also implicitly being accused by 星島 of "colluding with foreign forces" for having reported on her research into the #AntiELAB #HongKongProtests at #HongKong Democracy Council-organised event on the theme of whether #China's Nat'l Security Law for HK would destroy OCTS
When Ching Kwan Lee's presentation of her academic research at the HKDC-organised event were reported in the #HongKong press, she clearly stated that she had not been advocating HK independence, and affirmed that she had been quoted out of context.
Regardless of her actual response, pro-establishment #HongKong Legco member Ben Chan 陳恒鑌, who holds a HKUST Master's Degree in Materials Engineering, insisted that Ching Kwan Lee was "not qualified to teach at HKUST" in March on the basis of her reported remarks
Also pressured into resigning is the eminent HKUST sociologist Ming Sing 成名, a co-founder of the HK Scholars Alliance for #AcademicFreedom. Ming Sing co-edited Take Back Our Future: An Eventful Sociology of the #HongKong Umbrella Movement with Ching Kwan Lee in 2019 #香港

1/端傳媒 with a fascinating piece on Worshipping Mao to Suppress Deng 崇毛抑鄧?習時代對兩個領導人的重塑和打通四個「三十年」的野心 Is Xi recovering Mao as the "great man" or "hero" of CCP history, and relegating Deng to a mere "inheritor" of socialism? theinitium.com/article/202106…
2/ The author argues that by focusing on Mao's skill in Party-building, cultivating the "revolutionary tradition" & "red gene" of the CCP, Deng's decidedly secondary contribution is relegated to "reform & opening" & developing "socialism with Chinese characteristics".
3/ The author then adopts the keyword counting method used by @cnmediaproject to come up with levels of "warmth" in political discourse. From 2013 to 2019, the author finds Mao is pretty consistently hotter than Deng, w/a brief deflation due to #COVID19 in 2020 Image

New Thread: 人民日报: CCP has just released the long-awaited newly revised "Regulations of the Communist Party of #China on the Work of Grassroots Organizations in Regular Colleges and Universities" 中国共产党普通高等学校基层组织工作条例 paper.people.com.cn/rmrb/html/2021…
Spoiler alert: It does not mention #academicfreedom (or any other freedom); but it does mention Xi Jinping four times. Or, more rightly, it mentions Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era (习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想) four times.
I say "long awaited" because these regulations were initially deliberated & approved by the PBSC 5 Nov 2009, promulgated by the Party Central Committee on 13 Aug 2010; but, interestingly, then revised by the PB on 26 Feb 2021, then promulgated *again* by the CC on 16 April

Lists the Taiping Rebellion, Self-Strengthening Movement, 100 Days Reform, Boxer Rebellion & Xinhai Revolution as successive attempts that "all ended in failure, having failed to change the tragic fate of the Chinese people" reduced to semi-feudal, semi-colonial state post-1842
Notes that the 1917 October Revolution, however, brought Marxism-Leninism to #China, "ringing out like a gunshot," "lighting the way" for "advanced elements" seeking to save the country, rejuvenate the nation, "transforming them from spiritually passive to spiritually active."

白信 in DW: #China's revision of #HongKong's electoral law stole the show at this year's NPC. But we may have missed an equally big story: the NPC also voted to emasculate itself via its own organic law, undoing '82 Constitution 后疫情时代的“东升西降 #香港 p.dw.com/p/3qVIa?maca=z…
According to the 1982 state constitution, "All power in the People’s Republic of #China belongs to the people.
"The National People’s Congress and the local people’s congresses at various levels are the organs through which the people exercise state power."
It also recognised the NPC as "the highest organ of state power." These changes were ushered in in 1982, according to observer/participant Wang Hanbin, under the supervision of Peng Zhen in order to secure the role of the people as the masters of the state: "保证人民当家做主"
