I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're raising a daughter, and there's any chance that daughter might be driving cars in her lifetime? Teach that daughter how to do basic car maintenance stuff.
🧵/1
My own dad, despite being Top Gun Navy jet-jock, was notoriously not Mr. FixIt, at all, so he bought me a AAA membership when I turned 18yo. I went on to self teach, b4 the web (looong b4), how to do lotsa stuff re car maintenance.
/2
Hell, even lived on a boat for 12 yrs, during 25+ yrs I spent as broadcast engineer/field producer, but I digress.
Minimum, teach daughters:
- how to check/fill engine oil
- how to check/fill tires
- how to read tire size/PSI (on driver/port side door edge in sticker form)
/3
More:
- tire size also on tire itself, in raised printed letters on sidewall nr rim
- how to change a tire, including how to use the jacking system
- how to check/fill transmission fluid (if automatic transmission vehicle)
- how to check/fill brake fluid
/4
More:
- how to check/fill windshield washer fluid
- how to replace headlight bulbs
- how to replace wiper blades
- how to put in a new battery

I know, I know, "all she has to do is call a garage/AAA/her boyfriend/her husband
WHAT IF SHE HAS A GIRLFRIEND. Or a wife.
/5
Women need to know how to do this stuff if they're going to be driving cars.
Don't just teach sons this.
Teach daughters too.
Buy them a basic toolkit to keep in their car, if they buy/own one.
Include seatbelt cutter for their keychain.
Kits for sale *everywhere* online.
/6
"Gee, Casey, what made you say all this on a Sunday morning?"
Yesterday, I spent an hour working on my headlights (lens cleaning) in my apt parking lot.
Used my cordless drill, and a 3M purpose-built kit I bought from a DIY auto place (Advance Auto).
/7
The *stares* I drew were hilarious.
No one said anything.
Even tho they waved back at me, I sensed their utter confoundment at seeing me out there w/my cordless drill, sanding disks, compounding paste, and microfiber cloth.
What, old ladies can't ...
/8
Use their rollators as working stools for car care?
Why TF not?
I suppose I coulda paid some garage human to do this for me.
But I'm someone who resurfaced the hull of her 32ft sailboat - TWICE - over the 12 years she lived on it.
Also DIYed replugging her teak deck.
/9
People need to know how to do things.
Including girl people.
Boys need to be taught how to cook, how to clean, how to do basic sewing.
Girls need to be taught basic electric/mechanical repair, including automotive style (if they'll be driving cars).
/10
And don't stare open-mouthed at old ladies working on our cars.
We're not *that* weird.
Just XX humans who like to DIY.

@janoldenburg @RealCedricDark @jeremyfaust oh, happy to share!
A Watergate "I vas dere, Cholly!" 🧵
First, there was actual break-in. No family involvement there, thank gawd.
Then there was slow-rolling reveal on all of the things via WaPo reportage, which I saw in wire stuff in SFChron, where I lived.

@janoldenburg @RealCedricDark @jeremyfaust This was back in day of three TV channels.
In my Haight apt I had old Admiral b&w massive piece of furniture w/tiny TV screen that was 1st fam TV before I was even born.

Mostly nightly news packages, then

Considering that every email I get from @statnews includes a "sponsored by @PhRMA" banner, seeing this does not surprise me. Nor does PhRMA's willingness to lie about their true purpose: shareholder value outstrips human life.
Also high on @PhRMA to-do list is making sure only T1Ds with $$, Hep-C patients ditto, and CF patients too. And let's not forget cancer patients, including children, who find themselves on the receiving end of shortages - yes @TevaUSA I'm looking at you - or straight up cut-offs.
Correction, only T1Ds w/$$ et al CAN ACCESS LIFESAVING MEDICATIONS.

@dmccallie @HealthPrivacy @rickybloomfield @CommonWell Oh, my dude. So "nope" on that. If provider-provider solutions were either (a) present or (b) possible as solutions, woulda happened by now. But we're still in the clutches of Capt. Click, were dropdown menus proliferate but actual data/work flows are frozen sludge /1
@dmccallie @HealthPrivacy @rickybloomfield @CommonWell Dirtiest of dirty secrets in this arena is that there's no money in interop. Duplicative processes, rabbit holes where handoffs should be, all in service of preserving ever'body's revenue flow. NO ONE wants to give up their slice of ... /2
@dmccallie @HealthPrivacy @rickybloomfield @CommonWell That almost-$4-trillion-with-a-T cash hose that continues to crush all sectors of the US economy. Outcomes suck, but shareholder value is LIT AF, FAM! It's head/desk all day long in patient-ville. And it's literally killing us. /3

You going to Health Datapalooza next month? YOU WANT TO, you do! It's never just a nerd herd, and this year you'll get #cyberwoke. Settle in, I'll spin the tale. #HDPalooza #epatient #datarights
First, you need to know that as awesome as social media is for #epatients, #research teams, #healthpolicy wonks, #datascience peeps, and other members of the #HDPalooza tribe, there IS a dark side. #cyberwoke #dataprivacy #HumanRights

My input on #HIPAA2019 = from cheap seats. RFI commentary, in snips. Doctors and other clinical providers SHOULD NOT be required to release patient information to other doctors WITHOUT THE EXPRESS PERMISSION, per case/per data set, of the patient whose PHI is being released. /1
Information about mental health care, or genetic screening/testing, received by a patient SHOULD NOT be shared WITHOUT THE EXPRESS PERMISSION, per case/per data set, of the patient whose PHI is being shared. /2
ALL recipients of PHI shared by clinical providers MUST be available to the patient whose PHI it is. That data sharing audit trail must be available to the patient, either by physical notification via letter, ... /3

In case @hmkyale + @drjrums wonder why I got so shirty about JAMA article calling for #SDOH mining from social networks like, say, Facebook (shirty evidence here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1075892…) allow me to expound. #cyberwoke
First, ICYMI, Facebook's treachery against patient + #MeToo communities in wake of Cambridge Analytica cock-up reveal. PHI revealed in what members thought were walled gardens? NOPE. cnbc.com/2018/07/11/fac… #HBOC #cyberwoke
Then there was the #MeToo community - 10s of 1000s of members - that got its plug pulled when they complained: wired.com/story/how-a-me… #cyberwoke
