Tribute to Homi Jahangir Bhabha, the father of Indian Nuclear Programme, on his birth anniversary. He came from cambridge during WWII but later stayed in India to serve. In picture Bhabha with Albert Einstein (relativity), Yukawa, John Wheeler(black hole).
He joined IISc Bangalore after coming to India. Time when Vikram Sarabhai was also there, who became father of Space programme. Raman was director of institute. Later Bhabha established BARC and TIFR. Giants walking the same corridor.
Bhabha conceived India’s three stage nuclear programme, ambitious one.
- Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor
- Fast Breeder Reactor
- Thorium Based Reactors
In 1966 he died in a place crash at Mont Blanc. From L-R: Neils Bohr, Homi Bhabha, JRD Tata and Jamshed Bhabha.
Three stage nuclear program in simple words.
India has less stock of uranium, we are importing. But we have huge thorium deposits.
So a strategy which started with uranium but in the end we will be able to use our own thorium deposits for power generation. Self sufficiency.
Bhabha was elected as Fellow of Royal Society, London. This certificate from 1941 when he was Reader in Physics at @iiscbangalore. Proposed by none other than CV Raman. Also supported by stalwarts like Dirac & Birbal Sahni. He worked with Bohr, Pauli also. All great physicists.
So the proposers were;
Birbal Sahni
PAM Dirac
Eddington
WL Bragg
Lennard -Jones

On this day in 1730, 363 Bishnois from Jodhpur were killed in Khejarli, when objected to felling of Khejri trees by the king. Day is celebrated as #ForestMartyrsDay. Scores of ground staff & officers have laid down their lives in protecting the ecological security of country.
When teams came to cut Khejri trees summons were sent to 83 Bishnoi villages.
The cry was “सिर साटे रुख रहे तो भी सस्तो जाण” which means even if head goes to save a tree then also it is worth.
With this 363 Bishnoi’s martyred to save trees led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi. 2/n
To commemorate the day of this 'bishnoi massacre' India observe this day as 'Forest Martyrs Day'.
The modern Chipko movement was spread in years & is considered as eco-feminist movement, led by women. And a movement for ownership of resources based on gandhian principles.
Do you know #elephant family is all women group. Made of #mother, #aunts, #grandmother & all other #ladies. Most of the times Male leave herd early. Kids are looked by all female elephants in herd, all are mothers. Grandmother makes all decision for the family.
Males keep on joining & leaving herds. Well one of the accepted theory is. That males when they get young are pushed out from the herd/family by dominant female, also called as matriarch. To check the inbreeding. Which only shows elephants are highly intelligent.
- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.
We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.
They are prop roots. In #mangrove#ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.
Keystone species - species which are like keystone in a building. You take out that & building will fall. Important for the whole ecosystem. If they go extinct, the system will not function as usual. Example beaver.
Flagship species - species which are important & we select them as an ambassador for our conservation programs. Mostly charismatic species. So that other species which are in that habitat can also be protected. The habitat can be protected. Example tiger.
Umbrella is similar kind of thing. We chose a species by whose conservation we can conserve others also.
If anybody wants to see how elephants sleep. PC BBC.
These are the elephants from China about which I shared recently. They are 15 elephants which have walked 500 km. The herd was seen resting near a village in Xiyang township after heavy rain slowed down its travels.
