This briefing by independent experts on the value of covid rapid tests is in 2 minutes. Tune in to the livestream on any channel at this link. #bcpoli#Covid19BC protectbc.ca/livestream/
Dr. @VicLeungIDdoc debunking the myth (one we've heard from Dr Henry) that rapid antigen tests for covid "aren't accurate" - they are extremely good at detecting that people are in the infectious phase, better in fact than PCR tests due to rapidity of result and ease of use.
@VicLeungIDdoc Dr. Paul Tupper @TallPupper, SFU Mathematics, is part of the BC covid modelling group. Making strong argument in favour of rapid testing in LTC.
[There is no excuse, ethically speaking, for the lack of rapid testing in LTCs from the beginning of the pandemic.] #covid19bc
@LisaBarrettID@melodyma So many great, easy uses of rapid tests in Nova Scotia - in LTC, workplaces, remote communities, nighttime leisure hotspots ("Neg for the Night). People don't seem to realize that breaking a couple of chains of transmission has a massive effect on total #s of cases.
@LisaBarrettID@melodyma Dr. Lisa Barrett: the solution is for govts, doctors & health authorities to "control less." Build relationships with communities, empower them & use #rapidtests as a tool of engagement. "Just do it. Let people lead in the community. Using them is 100% better than not using them"
"Rapid tests are not being used in BC’s school system or recreational settings at this time, however, the province said that could change depending on transmission levels."
Yes, let's wait until things get very bad, instead of preventing that
..Here's the chilling contradiction:
BC govt has a program for asymptomatic rapid testing for private industry that it has been running the whole time it has been telling the public that rapid tests weren't useful for asymptomatic testing. #bcpoliterracestandard.com/news/mining-co…
So, @BIVnews is platforming forest industry whining by a resource extraction shill, Stewart Muir (ResourceWorks). I hesitate to link to it, but here it is, and then I'll rebut it. biv.com/article/2021/1…#OldGrowth forests #FairyCreek#bcpoli
@BIVnews ..Forest expert says: "Since 2005, 35 sawmills in BC’s Interior & 9 on the coast were permanently shuttered, along with ~ half the coastal shake & shingle mills, & 1000s of jobs were lost with these closures all without a ripple or a blip to BC’s GDP or the total BC labour force"
@BIVnews .."The forest industry needs to downsize by many more mills and jobs than Muir is parading here. We can only hope COFI’s [Council of Forest Industries] prediction will come to pass. Communities will rebound if we conserve all old growth now." #oldgrowth#bcpoli
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams As anyone who has been following this knows, there are some serious erosion problems with the #SiteC river diversion tunnel outlets. BC Hydro has been fluctuating the river a lot to accommodate the repairs - & locals have noticed that. Recall from March
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams ..Relevant section on the tunnel problem from today's #SiteC report: work "involves re-mediation [sic] of two areas where the shotcrete has detached exposing the underlying rock surface in order to mitigate deterioration of the exposed rock surface and remaining shotcrete"
This is that time in the election when we have smaller parties (& their members) railing against "strategic voting." This is in their self-interest, of course. But it makes the electorate materially stupider about how the First Pasts the Post electoral system works. #argh#elxn44
Under First Past the Post, all voting is really "strategic voting" unless your favourite party is leading in your riding. It's baked in. People seem to intuitively know this (eg voting to keep the Conservatives out) but they don't seem to get that this only happens under FPTP...
What bugs me is it's smaller parties (who BTW remain smaller precisely due to FPTP) who when we're not in elections often push for #ProportionalRepresentation (where strategic voting doesn't apply) but who, during FPTP elxns, confuse ppl by telling them not to vote strategically
In court, the logging company's lawyer said of the land defenders, 'their resistance to being arrested is just shocking!' (This generated some amusement)
Leaving aside what "resistance" means for now, let's just review what's been going on with the RCMP at #FairyCreek...
Recall: the RCMP not only used this injunction to remove forest defenders from the #FairyCreek area, they exceeded their powers, & barred media from witnessing their actions, & more. In August, Judge Thompson (same judge as today) found that: cbc.ca/news/canada/br…#bcpoli
Yesterday we heard harrowing stories of RCMP violence from Wet'suwet'en matriarch Marlene Hale who's been at #FairyCreek supporting Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones. See photo? Says police impregnate gloves w/ a sedative, force it over defenders' faces & drag them out @mikefarnworthbc
@mikefarnworthbc We heard about arrestees kept in overheated vans meant to carry fewer prisoners, hands tied & finally driven at breakneck speeds over logging roads until passengers throw up. Of the "green men" (RCMP tactical?) whose name badges are obscured by disallowed thin blue line badges
The land defenders' do not resist, so the fact so many are injured by police, esp by the "green men" who seem to have the job of roughing them up, is proof this violence is deliberate. Teal Jones wants access to the massive ancient trees now, & RCMP will harm kids to help them.
