[Thread] From 1 Dec, additional #COVID19 #vaccine doses will be available in SA for:

1. People of 18+ with certain conditions (e.g. HIV infection with CD4 counts lower than 200)
2. People of 18+ on certain treatments (e.g. long-term renal dialysis)

(See full list below)
2. How does it work?
If you are 18+ and live with one of the listed conditions or are on one of the listed treatments you can get:
1. A 2nd #JnJ dose (after a 1st dose of JnJ)
2. A 3rd #Pfizer dose (after a 2 Pfizer doses)

When?
28 days after your last #COVID19 vaccine dose
3. Can you wait longer than 28 days 2 get an extra #COVID19 jab if you live with 1 of the listed conditions/are on 1 of the listed treatments?

Yes. Depending on your doc/nurse's recommendation (u need a prescription) u can get an extra shot 1 - 3+ mnths after your last shot.
4. What does your doc or nurse need to do?
1. They need to fill out this form
2. They must keep a copy of the form
3. You need to take the filled out form with you to a vaccination site
5. How do you register for an extra dose (if you qualify)?

1. Register on the #EVDS with the same ID nr you originally registered with (you will get an sms with a special code)

or

2. Go to a vaccination site with your filled-out form and they will help you to register
6. Will the additional #COVID jab appear on your digital vaccine certificate?

Yes. The #EVDS will automatically record it (because a vaccinator will enter the info in the EVDS when you get the jab) and you certificate will be updated.

[Thread] 1. @ProfAbdoolKarim on the #OmicronVariant globally:

1. Globally #COVID19 case numbers are increasing
2. The WORLD might be entering a 4th #COVID wave Image
2. Variants have changed the #COVID19 endgame. Each SA #COVID wave = driven by a different variant with different characteristics:

Wave 1: Wuhan variant
Wave 2: Beta variant (more transmissible than Wuhan, immune escape abilities)
Wave 3: Delta (more transmissible than Beta) Image
3. #COVID19 case surges have been caused by different variants in different countries.
India = #DeltaVariant
Brazil = Gamma variant
SA = #Beta (Wave 2), Delta (Wave 3) Image

1. #CyrilRamaphosa:
1. SA = deeply disappointed in countries who have implemented travel bans @ SA. We urgently + immediately call on them 2 reverse the bans
2. There is no scientific justification 4 such bans. All they do is damage the economies of southern Africa
2. #CyriRamaphosa:
#COVID19 travel ban decisions don't respect the recent G20 declaration in which there is a commitment to help the tourism sectors of all countries to recover. Travel bans do exactly the opposite + are in contravention of the declaration.
3. #CyrilRamaphosa:
Some countries that have implemented travel bans @ SA:
UK, EU countries, Canada, Turkey, Sri Lanka, UAE Seychelles, Thailand

1/4 NB points made by @yodifiji of the AU's Vaccine Delivery Alliance:

The #OmicronVariant was inevitable because of the world's failure to vaccinate countries equitably.

What contributed?
- Wealthy countries' hoarding
- Manufacturers' refusal to share IP rights/know-how
2. @yodifiji:
Now those same wealthy countries who hoarded vaccines and contributed to inequity want to keep out Africans — #Omicron has been detected in several countries. But there are no travel bans for Belgium or Israel, only for African countries.
3. @yodifiji:
Had the original #SARSCoV2 1st been detected in Africa (and not China), the world would likely have "thrown away the key" + locked us out. Africa would have become known as the continent of #COVID19 + vaccines would not have been developed a urgently as currently.

[Thread] @Tuliodna:
1. On Fri, SA scientists will meet with @WHO to discuss a new variant detected, B.1.1.529. The variant will then get a Greek name
2. B.1.1.529 has an exceptionally high nr of mutations - some could lead to the variant being able to escape immunity
@Tuliodna:
1. The B.1.1.529 variant was discovered on 23 November
2. There will be an expected 200-300 cases in next few days, cases will increase fast
3. The reproduction #SARSCoV2 number (how many other people one infected person will infect) in SA is rising. When it's bigger than 1, it's concerning. Nationally, the nr is now 1.47 and in Gauteng it's 1.93.

[Thread] What is the potential impact of the new B.1.1.529 #COVID19 variant?
@rjlessells:
1. It's relatively simple to detect some B.1.1.529 cases, as it's possible to use PCR tests to do this in some cases
2. B.1.1.529 = has many mutations across different parts of the virus Image
2. Some of the mutations of the B.1.1.529 variant are situated around the spike protein that might affect how well our antibodies neutralise the #SARSCoV2 virus (so it might escape immunity to some extent).
3. Some of the mutations of B.1.1.529 look similar to mutations that have been found on other variants of concern that enhance those variants' transmissibility.

JUST IN [Thread] 1. There's an increase in the nr of #COVID19 cases and the proportion of tests coming out positive, says @nicd_sa.

WHERE? Gauteng, mostly in Tshwane
AGE GROUPS in Tshwane = most affected:
- 10-29 years (past week)
- 20-44 at a higher education institute
2. Do the new cases signal the beginning of a fourth #COVID19 wave?
- We don't know yet, localised (in other words the cases are mostly only in Tshwane) increases in cases are expected
3. Is a new variant emerging?
- Genomic sequencing in SA shows no evidence of this. But it takes time to transport samples + analyse them, so the results we have go hand-in-hand with a bit of a delay, which means we're mostly looking @ results of samples of a few weeks ago.
