Institutional silencing of scientists & academics needs to stop.
Public universities playing politics to protect 💰 from state budgets comes at expense of academic integrity or protecting the public in a #pandemic that has killed >700K Americans, 1:500
There is a false claim #DEI silences professors, academic freedom, freedom of speech. No, those who previously confidently said racist, sexist, ableist, anti-#mentalhealth things face accountability. Loss of “freedom of speech” =getting jailed/disappearing businessinsider.com/china-coronavi…
Having to hear “that is racist” is not loss of freedom of speech. Is identification of the content.
You can choose to feel “personally attacked” or you could choose to improve. Must identify racism as it drives harm, death, wrong dx
Does caring about accuracy & identifying wrong labeling or false statement make one “a bully” as many in #DEI are accused? No, academia is full of debate & different opinions.
Such mislabels = manipulative playing victim while public health *is* silenced.
What these academics who get fired need to understand is your customer is your students. They pay your salary. If you fail to deliver value, including if you insult & mislabel them, your customers will relieve you of your job. Higher ed is a business. Students are the customer.
The problem is in public universities the state & politicians are who hold purse strings
accountability from students is not the same the as compared to private universities.
It always comes back to 💰💰💰 - who generates it, who controls it, who can decide to take it away.

Missing some Tweet in this thread? You can try to
force a refresh
First: what was the outcome of the #SciComm? Intention matters little as communitarian happens on the terms of the listener/reader. How was your #communication received/understood?
A doc:
recognized similar scenario
calmed team
avoided overaggression
achieved a similar result
The fact that the #MedEd teaching allowed an EQ & #leadership outcome (staying course despite others’ anxiety), not merely medical knowledge/journal club, is striking. How was this achieved? Let’s look at the thread. How do you transmit courage AND knowledge via tweets in a 🧵?
I only became certified as an executive #coach as I experience SUCH bad coaching...I can't even begin to describe all the levels of wrong. But this is one of those times (a lot of my life) when someone harmed (on my dime no less) then I was motivated to create something better
A part of me was like yeah, yeah, yeah..I know this stuff...hurry up and give me the darn certificate. But.... I have to say, I see myself changing in practice sessions: able to not tell/be a consultant but open up space, listen, reflect THEIR words, then get them to go deeper.
I see SO many bad...like harmful bad..coaches out there...who beat you up to try to motivate you while also talking of compassion. *sigh*
I am learning that I care SO much about #safety (which I knew) - it is the trigger when I fail to be a coach and become ED doc/pediatrician
A woman can die in childbirth before adoption occurs. She could lose her job because of pregnancy. She could be abused. 20% of pregnant women experience domestic violence. Homicide is the #1 cause of death of pregnant women. Women are often killed by partners when trying to leave
If we want pregnancy to be some beautiful thing, great… change the culture & pay for women’s health. Make pregnancy safe. Hold employers accountable. Start holding abusers accountable. Get them out of the police force. There is a ton of work to do.
#AcademicChatter loves to condescend & snark from a position of intellectual superiority …but those whose monetize “expertise” & sell “certainty” as experts, are actually more biased:
At this moment I am very sorely tempted to retreat to a cave or mountaintop, like Thoreau, and disengage from humanity.
This is a subtweet.
To be honest, when you are in writing mode, that actually is exactly what you should do. The ability to communicate big ideas to humanity sometimes requires disengaging from humanity. Writers are loners & recluses.
Mom also wanted me to “settle down” & I am not opposed to the idea. I’m also aware that:
The maternal mortality rate, especially for Black women is appalling. Has American feminism ever concerned itself with deaths of fellow women? No. Count number of women in C-suite (who align with anti-justice incentives) and fight for privileged access of a few. Trickle down.
Even as a nation of elitist feminism, have these women, mostly wives of or daughters of, become President? No. That would require a woman having value or respected as an individual, as opposed to American culture of women valued or gaining access for their relationships to men.
