#JoePhaahla (health min) on #Omicron at Fri's @healthza briefing:

[Thread]

1. Omicron = detected in 76+ countries
2. All SA's 9 provinces = in 4th wave, although NC is still technically entering its 4th wave (but that's according to a calculation formula, not in practice)
2. #JoePhaahla:
1. Although Gauteng = still highest nr of new #COVID19 cases, all 9 provinces in SA have seen a rapid rise in new cases
2. GP (where SA's #Omicron outbreak started): Thu = 27% of new #COVID19 cases vs. 7-10 days ago, GP cases accounted for 70-80% of new cases
3. #JoePhaahla:
The nr of 4th wave #COVID19 cases has exceeded the peaks of waves 1, 2 (Beta), 3 (#Delta)

By how much?
Wave 1: 21 new cases/100,00 people
Wave 2: 32 new cases/100,000 people
Wave 3: 33 new cases/100,000 people
Wave 4 (#Omicron): 37 new cases/100,000 people
4. #JoePhaahla:
1. #COVID19 test positivity rates:
- 8 provinces (except for GP) have + rates of over 30% (so about 1/3 tests = come out +)
- GP used to be 35%+, but is now decreasing
2. EC, FS, NC, WC = more than 100% increase in daily new #COVID cases vs. previous 7 days
5. #JoePhaahla:
1. The active #COVID19 cases in SA now stand at 210 635
2. This is 10% higher than the previous 24 hours
3. The good news our recovery rate = good at 91%
6. #JoePhaahla:
1. Hospital admissions = 70% rise over the past 7 days, but in absolute numbers = at a fairly low level (because we come from a low base nr)
2. Admissions = much lower % of #COVID19 cases than in 3rd wave (#Delta)
2. Nr of 4th wave admissions so far = 7,614
7. #JoePhaahla:
1. 2nd week, 3rd wave (#Delta, 17-24 Jun): 4,485 new #COVID cases/day and 888 hospitalisations/day (19% of Covid cases = admitted)
2. 2nd week, 4th wave (Omicron, 9-15 Dec): 20,207 new cases/day, hospital admissions = 348/day (1.7% of COVID cases = admitted)
8. #JoePhaahla:
1. GP = early indications that the 4th #COVID wave peak = reached, but cases in all other 8 provinces = rapidly rising
2. Across SA = milder cases, but not necessarily because #Omicron = less virulent, could be vaxx coverage (60+ years = 66% vaxxed with 1 dose)
9. #JoePhaahla:
1. @healthza = very worried about the decline in uptake of #CVID19 vaccinations, especially over last 7-10 days
2. Daily doses = 100 000 to 130 000 which is far below the target of 250 000 per day
10. #JoePhaahla:
1. The only way to reduce the "power" #COVID19 has over us is through vaccination
2. Over the Dec holidays a nr of fixed vaxx sites will remain open and there will be pop-up sites in shopping males, etc
11. #JoePhaahla:
What will happen to lockdown levels over the holidays?

1. SA will remain at alert level 1 lockdown for now
2. But @heatlhza will monitor the situation and make recommendations for increased restrictions if necessary

What is happening with #COVID19 vaccine boosters + when will SA start?

[Thread]

Nicholas Crisp, @heatlhza:
1. #Pfizer boosters = given 6 mnths after the 2nd dose (that's what Sahpra approved)
2. 1st person = qualify on 28 Dec, @healthza = on that day/shortly thereafter
2. Nicholas Crisp:
1. People who got vaccinated 1st will get boosters 1st because of the 6 month period that need to lapse after the 2nd dose
2. So if you're 50 and went for your Pfizer vaxx before someone who is 60, you will get your booster before the 60 year old person
3. Will SA shorten the 6 month period for a #Pfizer booster after the 2nd dose like some other countries?
1. Sahpra has approved 6 months (not shorter)
2. But Sahpra is looking into data for shorter periods, will announce decision when there's clarity

BREAKING [Thread]: 1. SA’s first real-world data on #Pfizer’s #COVID19 jab’s protection @ #Omicron infection + hospitalisation via @Discovery_SA + @MRCza

Note: This is data from the 1st 3 weeks of the outbreak, so it might change - regard it as preliminary real-world data Image
2. What data are findings based on?
1. @Discovery_SA = SA’s largest health insurer (3.7 mil members)
2. They used 211,000 positive #COVID19 PCR tests of adults (18+)
3. 41% of 211,000 + tests = received 2 doses of #Pfizer ImageImage
3. Here is how #Omicron has progressed in SA:
#Omicron = now 90% of #COVID infections in SA ImageImage

[Thread]: Explanation:

Why will the price of #PCR #COVID19 tests in SA's private sector GO DOWN from R850/test to R500?

An agreement was reached between the Competition Commission and 2 major private labs, Ampath (Du Buisson Kramer Swart Bouwer Incorporated) + @LancetLab_ZA.
2. What are #PCR #COVID19 tests?

They're the gold standard of #COVID19 testing and are also called molecular tests. PCR tests detect genetic material of #SARSCoV2 (the COVID virus) using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). More:
bit.ly/31I43Lv
3. So #PCR tests are those tests for which a #HealthWorkers take a long swab and insert it into the back of your throat (oropharyngeal swab). These are the tests that you require for international traveling.

Update on #Omicron in SA via @Dr_Groome from @nicd_sa (presented @ Fri's @heatlhza press briefing):

[Thread]

1. The 7 day moving average of new #COVID19 cases = increased 40-fold between 16 Nov (332) + 8 Dec (13,237)
2. This increase is much steeper than in any previous wave
2. @Dr_Groome:
1. The increase in new #COVID19 cases = mostly driven by Gauteng, where the #Omicron outbreak started
2. Left graph = absolute nr of cases, right graph = incidence (new cases), accounted for population size = starting to see increases in other provinces too
3. What do new #COVID19 cases look like by age?
1. Early on in the #Omicron wave we saw more cases in younger age groups
2. Currently, the incidence is highest in the 20-39 year and 40-59 year group, followed by the 60+ year group

[Thread] What's happening with #COVID19 vaccine boosters in SA?
Nicholas Crisp, @healthza:
1. #Pfizer boosters (3rd shots) = approved this week for 6 mnths after a 2nd shot
2. The 1st group of people = vaccinated on May 17 (start of rollout) + would qualify 4 a booster on 28 Dec
2. Nicholas Crisp, @healthza:
1. @healthza needs a recommendation from the vaccine MAC before it can start with a booster rollout
2. If approved, the rollout will start in early Jan (not on the 28 Dec when the 1st person technically qualifies)
3. Nicholas Crisp, @healthza: When will people who got jabbed with #JnJ get boosters?

1. #JnJ applied for @SAHPRA1 booster approval on Thu
2. Sahpra = review application over the weekend + make a recommendation next week
3. #JnJ + #Pfizer boosters = rolled out simultaneously

[Thread] Why have 2nd #Pfizer doses for teens (12-17 yrs) been opened in SA?

Nicholas Crisp, @healthza:
Real-life data now shows the risk of myocarditis (heart inflammation) for teens after 2 shots of #Pfizer's vaccine is more or less the same as for the general population
2. Nicholas Crisp, @healthza:

Real-life data shows there is an increase in myocarditis among teens who get #COVID infection, so full vaccination (2 #Pfizer shots) will protect them against falling seriously ill with it.
3. Watch this video to learn more about the extremely low risk of heart inflammation after a #COVID19 vaccination for teens: bhekisisa.org/multimedia/202…
