We've already reached Day 34 of #Russia's illegal war in #Ukraine.
It's the day when peace talks resume, but I'm guessing the attendees will be careful about cups of tea, chocolates or shaking hands after the nerve agent stories yesterday.
All war updates here⬇️ in real time:
Front lines haven't moved much for a week.
Russia's almost taken #Mariupol (see end of yday's thread).
But a little west #Ukraine troops advance towards trying to reclaim occupied #Kherson.
This post says Russians seem to be leaving the city all morning
Not sure what Russia is doing here.
This gear is heading north, deeper into #Belarus.
So it could be the invaders removing equipment from the battlefield in north-west Kyiv, and redeploying in #Chernihiv or moving right around to #Donbas area.
While we "doom scroll" through the news and threads, it's vital to remember the human impact, the real testimony from those forced to live through this Kremlin monster's barbaric actions.
With #Ukraine's Resistance in #Mariupol' in retreat there's less fighting and more people are emerging from shelters. But look at what's left (or rather isn't)
People here just happy they're alive and have some food

One person is now confirmed dead after the Russian strike of #Mykolaiv government building this morning.
Rescue work continues.
Look closely and you can see the missile just before it smashes into the building (moving from centre left to bottom right)
Following my tweet earlier showing Russian equipment heading further into Belarus, the Armed Forces of #Ukraine say "they've noted the withdrawal of certain units from #Kyiv + #Chernihiv. They have a problem rotating the existing group"
However the blockade of Chernihiv continues
A Brazilian journalist has left #Ukraine saying new laws enacted by @ZelenskyyUa have made it impossible to continue.
André Liohn also told of illegal beatings and detentions of reporters and photographers.
More inflammatory words from the "leader" of #Chechnya Kadyrov.
"It is necessary to destroy Bandera. I believe these negotiations are of no use. We need to completely finish what we started: to destroy Bandera, Nazis. Only then should we decide what to do next.”
Putin will give Russian passports to ANYONE who speaks Russian it seems.
A bill has been submitted to parliament; Also anyone whose ancestors lived in Russia will be willingly accepted.
Obviously they try to make this seem about #Ukraine but it's a direct threat to #Belarus too
2/ It's likely the little man in the Kremlin is also threatening #Estonia and the other Baltic nations with the "passport war". #Moldova too with Transnistria in the firing line.
We know the next step (as in Georgia, Ukraine) of needing to protect RU citizens (with bombs)
The death toll in the missile attack on #Mykolaiv has risen to seven.
22 others are injured according to emergency services which released these photos from the scene, the Regional State Administration
We will never know how many people #Russia killed in the #Mariupol' theatre.
Occupying troops have reached and "cleaned" the scene before state approved media were allowed to film inside the ruined building.
Up to 1000 were believed entombed in the missile strike.
Peace Talks:
#Ukraine adviser @Podolyak_M appeals to friendly countries to become guarantors for any peace deal.
"we have the problem of Crimea which is why we need this security."
"Our guarantee must be the same as NATO article 5 - any guarantor nation must help us immediately. They must give us what we need to restore security.
This is the most important demand."
Peace Talks
Podoloyak (Ukr)
"First there will be a referendum, then ratification of guarantor countries, then our Parliament will pass resolution."
"We want to make a deal that neither side will use war to solve the Crimea issue."
Peace Talks
"It is very important for us that Russia accepts the articles of the Geneva convention.
No guarantor will back this deal if they do not."
"First 3.5m people must return to Ukraine before we can take this vote (referendum)
"We will continue negotiations with Russia"
Peace Talks
Ukraine:
"We already started negotiating with guarantor countries."
Peace Talks
Ukraine:
"In the occupied territories (Donbas), Ukrainian law must be upheld."
Peace Talks
Russian side now speaking.
"First Foreign Ministers must agree and can meet and then after that maybe the Presidents can meet."
But after today we agreed and offered solutions. Maybe FMs can agree meeting quickly and peace is possible."
Both sides have said the Peace Talks in Istanbul were "constructive"
But Russia seems unlikely to accept proposal to "negotiate" about Crimea.
Peace Talks:
Press briefings now over.
Summary:
Ukraine says it's ready to put a deal to the people, but first there has to be a ceasefire.
The guarantee of peace needs to be legally enforceable - "we do not want a repeat of the Budapest memorandum"
FMs hope to meet soon.
Peace Talks
Russia said it has "decided to reduce military activities around #Chernihiv and #Kyiv"
Also demands Ukraine sticks to Geneva convention re POWs (after video of Ukr soldiers allegedly abusing Russian prisoners)
Details of what Ukraine expects a Guarantor deal to look like:
In case of aggression against Ukraine there will be 3 days to find a solution through diplomacy, after which the guarantor countries MUST supply military help and enforce a No Fly Zone over Ukraine.
Yet another🇺🇦 journalist has been abducted by Russia.
Irina Dubchenko was detained on Saturday in Rozivka, #Zaporizhia Oblast and taken to Donetsk "in connection with the hiding and support of a Ukrainian serviceman."
#Ukraine's Armed Forces chiefs confirm #Russia has withdrawn many troops and equipment from around #Kyiv. The invading army is still shelling and firing in almost all villages along the frontline, but no forward movement. It does appear they've retreated defensive trenches.
Eyewitness near #Chernihiv says Russia today resumed firing Multi-Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) on the besieged city "for the first time in weeks"
That's despite #Russia's pledge to "scale back" in the northern city.
Virtually all webcams in #Ukraine have been switched off, with some operators receiving a visit from the police. It follow the enactment of the new law.
The only ones surviving now are showing generic skylines or building sites with no traffic/roads visible.
Understandable.
#Mariupol' - no way of verifying, but reports of another 70 people forcibly abducted from a hospital.
Both medical staff + patients were ordered out of Maternity hospital No. 2 in the ruined port-city.
It's claimed >20,000 residents have been taken to Russia against their will.
#Chernihiv - another explosion heard this afternoon and captured live on CNN.
Interviewee, the city's Mayor Vladyslav Atroshchenko didn't even flinch!
The official total calculated by Ukraine was 597 this morning but I've seen 3 more destroyed today already.
1/2 This appears to be as brazen as it is outrageous.
A Russian channel shows the occupiers of #Melitopol distributing humanitarian aid.
However, MelitopolNews Telegram channel analysed the report and says it's actually from a convoy of #Ukraine's aid impounded a few days ago.
2/2
Journalists from #Melitopol have frozen the original Russian broadcast to show firstly the aid is unloaded in the same fire station where real Mayor Fedorov's humanitarian aid arrived.
Also all the aid is from Western Europe, nothing from sanctioned Russia! #SaveUkraine
Here's one of the Russian tanks claimed by #Ukraine today. This the result of a fleeing crew near #Kyiv.
Just awaiting a friendly tractor to take it away!
1/2 #Ukraine is reportedly considering a law to ban the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Russian Patriarch is strongly linked with the FSB and govt. For instance never criticising Putin and other unChristian acts such as blessing missiles knowingly on their way to kill Ukrainians.
2/2 It follows an incident in #Cherkasy yesterday when a Russian minister apparently refused requests to pray for a dead Ukrainian soldier. Later the civil army burst in to the church, arresting the minister in front of his flock.
However, banning the church is controversial.
Many missiles have been intercepted according to the armed forces of #Ukraine. Mostly launched from #Belarus.
two sources confirm two missile strikes in #Khmelnytsky tonight.
Initially looks like a hit on another oil depot. #SaveUkraine
After this morning's deadly strike on #Mykolaiv local government building, the popular leader of the region, Vitaliy Kim went to see the damage inside the building.
Volunteers rescuing people from shelters in #Mariupol' were hit by a Russian missile strike as they tried to help women and kids evacuate the city.
One guy kept filming through it all.
Dramatic video - Warning graphic footage.
With regards to the potential banning of the Russian Orthodox Church, following the arrest of a Russian minister inside a church yesterday, another claim:
Day 35 of #Russia's war of choice.
5 whole weeks of hatred, death and destruction.
For what?
Talks of peace, and "scaling back" yesterday were followed by missiles fired across #Ukraine at night.
All the news, and a few views of mine, in this thread⬇️
1/2 A few people write saying #Ukraine should compromise or #Ukraine should give up on NATO or Crimea or Donbas etc.
Let me remind you #Ukraine is neutral. It never invaded any country. It was never at war until Russia invaded (twice).
Any compromise is rewarding the aggressor
2/2 It's an old tactic.
Bully. Wage war. Demand unattainable amounts.
Appear to lower your demands and you've compromised! Is everyone stupid?
Please also remember Putin is a compulsive liar. He broke written agreements over Ukraine, he promised not to invade. Do not trust him!
Govt pledging most citizens won't be unduly affected
Secretary of the Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov says "it can be restricting traffic, additional transport checks, documents checks. These issues are preventive, so that the country remains calm."
Tuesday's #Covid19 thread starts here. The arguments still raging in the #UK about "Living with Covid" following the announcement from the govt. that infected people no need to isolate from Thursday.
All the important data and news updated in this thread throughout the day
However I am commentating on tennis again today; 3 matches, long day.
I do try to reply all your queries but @SimonCalder here answers many that I'm repeatedly asked, using his judgement on the regular Q "when will xxxxland drop testing requirements?"
Not happened yet, but I will be very surprised if Russian tanks are not on Ukrainian territory by the morning. Initially in Donbas territories.
A few more made up "atrocities" or staged attacks will be broadcast by 21st century Lord Haw Haws and then a hot war on the frontline.
My guess is #Ukraine's forces are likely to be pushed back beyond the current frontline, which has been frozen for years. I doubt it will extend to Odesa, Kharkiv or even Mariupol' yet.
It will be symbolic advance, a few small villages, maybe Slovyansk.
I've not been wrong so far
