Given the growing #Covid infection numbers in #Shanghai, the government’s current “Zero Covid” approach must surely mean a lot more lockdown time for the city’s 25 million residents. #China
Prior to the current East-then-West full shutdown for 4 or 5 days each, there were already parts of #Shanghai under #Covid lockdown. There will be more parts of the city locked down after the current mass testing of 25 million residents. #China#Omicron outbreaks growing.
The three hurdles to the government of #China switching #Covid policy: 1. Many more vaccine booster shots needed for elderly, 2. The Party has been boasting about its policy as a contrast to the approach overseas so it’d need to explain why it too has decided to open up and 3…
And 3. The Party Congress this October will be when Xi Jinping enters his historic third term. He doesn’t want this with #Covid outbreaks everywhere. If it was an unmanageable health emergency that’d be bad; if it spread and was actually quite manageable could be worse for him?
It could be worse politically because many in #China might start asking if the country needed to keep locking down entire cities, entire provinces? Don’t forget #Jilin Province has been locked down for weeks. 10s of millions of people here are restricted to their homes today.
#Pudong, the east side of #Shanghai, was supposed to have “re-opened” by now after a brief lockdown. This has not happened. The entire city remains closed Sunday, with #Omicron infection numbers increasing. #China’s “zero #Covid” approaches are under massive strain.
Many people in #Shanghai are asking why those infected by #Covid - who’ve been vaccinated and have little or no symptoms - are being forced to go the stay in mass centralised quarantine in crappy (at times actually gross) facilities instead of just staying at home? #China
This compulsory centralised quarantine approach has involved young children sent there without their parents. Babies, only months old, who have tested positive to #Covid (whatever the symptoms) have also been separated from their parents and looked after by staff in quarantine.
The elderly, who’ve tested positive to #Covid, are also being sent to compulsory centralised quarantine centres (whatever their symptoms are) instead of being allowed to just stay at home. These centres are at times in halls or in demountable sheds and potentially with no showers
There is also evidence emerging of health officials not happy that the government is not listening to them and treating the response to #Covid in #China as a political exercise. See this thread…
After #Japan invaded #China if I had refused to call this an invasion or even a war and I repeatedly said all sides should simply “exercise restraint” would this have been on “the right side of history”? What about #Germany invading #Poland? news.cgtn.com/news/2022-03-2…
Serious question for the government of #China: could you explain precisely how you expect a country being invaded to “exercise restraint”? If #Ukraine “exercises restraint” there will be no #Ukraine. No? #UkraineRussiaWar#Russia
For those who’re saying, what about the politicians who appeased #Japan when it invaded #China... well yeah exactly. Now do you understand the concept?
#China today has city-wide #Covid lockdowns in place in #Shenzhen (12.5 million people), #Dongguan (10.5 million), #Langfang (5.5 million) + a province-wide lockdown in #Jilin (24 million residents). Also quasi-lockdown provisions, in #Shanghai (26 million) & #Xian (13 million).
In addition, there are #Covid restrictions in cities right across #China from localised housing community lockdowns to the closure of bars and restaurants, schools shifting to online classes etc. Many cities also carrying out mass testing.
As #China’s officials continue to pursue a “zero-#Covid” strategy aiming for elimination in each outbreak, there’re more than 50 million residents under strict, stay at home, lockdown today. Then add those under softer “quasi-lockdown” measures that’s more like 90 million people.
The whataboutism hitting social media from those who can’t bear to criticise Vladimir Putin for invading another country and bombing civilian communities is something to behold. Even a child can understand that one evil act doesn’t excuse another. It’s pretty simple.
For example, here’s what they’re making excuses for... #UkraineRussiaWar
That China is only getting its people out now could in mean 1: #Beijing initially felt it was important not to upset #Russia by prematurely getting Chinese people out of Ukraine or 2: #China did not expect #Moscow to attack all of #Ukraine?
Or possibility no 3: Could it mean #China thought that #Russia would take #Ukraine so quickly that it would not necessitate Chinese people leaving (hence the early advice to put Chinese flags on cars)? NOTE: this would've been a risky strategy because even a quick war is deadly.
In #Beijing today Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin told a regular press briefing that #Russia and #China are "strategic partners" but not "allies". He said China would not interfere in the #Ukraine crisis.
Asked if #China was neutral in terms of the #UkraineRussiaWar, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said: "China is always on the side of peace and justice". #Russia#Ukraine
Asked about the removal of some of #Russia's banks from the SWIFT system because of the country's invasion of #Ukraine, #China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman said: "We do not endorse sanctions as a means of solving problems. China and Russia will continue normal trade cooperation".
