@isro, which had a relatively quiet year (2021-22) so far as space launches were concerned, had been working on unique, cutting-edge technologies and processes through the year. 25 patents at the rate of 1 every 15 days filed in the said period. 1/n
It also filed 5 new copyrights applications. As on date, @isro has 193 active patents, 73 copyrights and 13 trademarks to its name. Another 96 under examination and 18 are being drafted by lawyers. 2/n
Comparatively, Isro had filed 19 patents and one copyright application in 2020-21. At the end of that fiscal, Isro had 144 active patents, 66 copyrights and 13 trademarks. 3/n
Sudheer Kumar N, director, CBPO, told me: “Developing new technologies has been an integral part of Isro, which has enabled us to be self-sufficient in all aspects of space activity. As with any organisation, more we grow, the more we do. This is reflected even in patents. 4/n
Aside from developing technologies and processes, @isro has been more actively transferring technologies to the private industry in the past few years. Nearly 400 technologies have been transferred to more than 300 industries spread across the country. 5/n
From just 56 agreements enabling transfer of 39 technologies to 20 companies in 1980, Isro had 520 agreements with 233 industries for 407 technologies as of September 2020. It has now further jumped to 611 agreements with 326 industries as of March 30, 2022. 6/n
While @isro has been transferring technologies to companies from very early on, the first serious impetus came at the time of Satish Dhawan occupying the top office. Since then, the space agency has consistently transferred technology to industries. 7/n
“Isro has always partnered with industry. Earlier we mostly transferred technologies that had spin-offs, now, with the opening up of the sector, we're also focusing on technologies that can help industries take off. This helps them to not reinvent the wheel," Kumar said. 8/n
Majority of the technology transferred by Isro — around 45% — are in the field of electronics & computer-based technology, and telecom broadcasting together. Technologies relating to chemicals and special materials form the single-largest cluster. 9/n
Further, in 2021-22, Isro has transferred 69 technologies to Space PSU NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), which has been empowered by the Department of Space (DoS) to in turn transfer them to the industries. n/n

@isro, as part of its preparations for India’s first human spaceflight mission — #Gaganyaan — is planning seven integrated air-drop tests (IADTs) of simulated crew modules, which will validate the parachute system. 1/n Image
While some tests in the run-up to these 7 tests have been completed, IADTs will be crucial before moving ahead to the next phase. The space agency has already completed the preliminary structural design of the crew seat assembly, the IADT structure design of the crew module. 2/n
“For validation of the parachute system, seven IADTs are planned with a simulated crew module, maintaining external configuration similar to flight… 3/n

For the first time since its development, India will be using #GSLV class of rockets to launch commercial missions, first of which'll be a @OneWeb constellation. All commercial launches by DoS and its arms so far have been onboard PSLV. 1/n
Now, @NSIL_India has identified #GSLVMk3 for commercial launch of @OneWeb satellites. Sources indicate that the next Mk3 launch could be that of OneWeb, even as another has been identified and is being readied for #Chandrayaan3. 2/n
I was the first to report in October last year about GSLV-Mk3 having inquiries for launching commercial satellites and an impending announcement (see link). 3/n

Was caught up with something else the last couple of days. Here’s more on Prof Ajay Kumar Sood from @iiscbangalore and his appointment as the new @PrinSciAdvGoI. Prof Sood has succeeded @kvijayraghavan 1/n Image
A Year of Science Chair Prof in the dept of physics, IISc, Sood is renowned for pioneering research in quantum materials and soft condensed matter. The PSA office, established in 1999, aims to provide advice to PM & cabinet on matters related to science, tech & innovation. 2/n
Sood was born on Jun 26, 1951 in Gwalior; did MSc in Physics at Panjab Univ in 1972; PhD in Physics from IISc in 1982. 1973-1988: scientist at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research with a postdoc sojourn (1983-85) at Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Germany. 3/n

#Thread #Astronomy #Stars #UPDATE

An international team of scientists led by #Indian #astronomers has spotted a new member belonging to the extremely rare group of young stars that exhibit what's called episodic accretion. 1/n Image
Episodic accretion is a process where stars accrete via a disk from a more spherically distributed envelope which adds mass to the disk & makes it unstable on an irregular basis. Such instability dumps extra material onto the star & accretion rate & luminosity increase. 2/n
Indian astronomers from the @ARIESNainital as part of an international team, including from @TIFRScience and @IIABengaluru have discovered “Gaia 20eae”, the latest member of episodically accreting young stars, according to @IndiaDST . 3/n

Here’s the first one. #Thread #Satellites #Debris

Exclusive: More than 10yrs after it was launched, #MeghaTropiques, @isro & @CNES joint weather modelling satellite that was studying water cycle & energy exchanges in the tropics has reached what’s called “end of mission”. 1/n
The satellite, which was launched in October 2011 and initially estimated to have a life of five years has worked for five-years-and-six-months more than initial estimations and sent in at least 5TB of raw data which has yielded around 30TB of data sitting on various servers. 2/n
A senior Isro scientist said: “As on date, the satellite still has 120kg of fuel and end of mission is also not because of failures in communication, solar panels or any other systems or because we lost communication. All of those are still working.” 3/n

Here we go. #Thread #space #update

2 key missions of spl test vehicle developed as part of #Gaganyaan are most likely in Aug & Dec. As I’d reported earlier, @isro is working towards 2 tests to establish crew abort & escape systems before the first uncrewed mission. 1/n
We are looking to schedule the 1st abort mission in Aug & the 2nd in Dec: Somnath. @isro to intentionally cause an anomaly & allow crew module to come out of it, do tumbling manoeuvres, deploy parachutes, & land in a designated spot on the sea before being recovered. 2/n
Aside from this — which is only one type of abort test — there are different events such as maximum dynamic pressure condition, maximum acceleration condition, some transient condition etc, in which abort will become critical in flight... 3/n
