Greenland
I was there in 2019 when record heat caused the island to lose more than 530 billion tons from its ice sheet -- the largest annual loss since record-keeping began in 1948.
The 2022 heatwaves threaten to break 2019 records.

2/ Two things are happening: old ice is melting, never to be replenished, pushing rising sea levels. And new sea ice is failing to form at historic levels. While eyes have been on Europe's soaring heat, it's been HOT over the North Pole & pts of #Greenland , too.

3/ So far, #Greenland looks on track to see more melting of it's ice sheet than occurred with record-breaker 2019 summer. This is #GlobalWarming planet-wide impact, as fresh water pours into salty seas, altering ocean chemistry & temperatures.

4/ And because the Arctic seas are too warm, and convection is changing, less new sea ice is forming. So far, 2022 seems on track to offer the lowest amount of new Arctic sea ice in recorded history.
