After the embarrassing retreat from #Kharkiv, the Kremlin seemed to take revenge by plunging a lot of #Ukraine into darkness by hitting power structures in #Kharkiv y'day.
The British update concentrates on the #Kharkiv defeat for #Russia. I've seen some calculations that the area won back by #Ukraine is over 8,000 square kilometres.
After the power station attacks, the Head of RT commented "Electricity is a privilege not a right", echoing some EU countries' comments when denying RUS visas
Pres.Zelenskyy made a stirring response: we'd rather be without anything than be Russian
With #Russia fleeing from well over a third of the frontline, it's not surprising to see numbers return to something like 'normal' in the daily estimate of losses.
Of course absolutely no surprise in the elections in #Russia
The ruling United Russia took over 80% with a spokesman saying the party was "able to correct the mistakes and improve the result."
There was an unfeasible rise is support in traditionally sceptic Siberia & Far East.
#RussiaOnFire.
In #Miscow region a huge blaze at a factory
It's in #Volokolamsk.
Rumours the plant makes complements which can be used in weapons. Unconfirmed.
There appears to be more success inside #Luhansk region for #Ukraine.
A flag has appeared on top of another pylon in a village a couple of kilometres over the state border from #Kharkiv region, the second instance in 2 days
A lot of activity reported in #Melitopol today.
This channel reports #Russia's helicopters have been flying low around the occupied town much of the morning - this one over a school.
I saw a large segment of this talk show on Russian TV yesterday. Here's a little clip of it, showing that at least some people are getting the message and prepared to talk about it openly. Obviously this guy got ganged up on, but more signs in #Russia of discontent.
#Ukraine's intelligence says Lt Gen Roman Berdnikov lasted only 16 days in charge of the "Western Group"
He is replaced by Col Gen Oleksandr Lapin, while Berdnikov's future, who previously commanded in Syria, is "under consideration"
#Ukraine is back in control of the northern national border with #Russia.
"The entire northeast of the #Kharkiv region — from the village of #Vesele to the city of #Vovchansk — was liberated"
Some photos from the "cleaning" - more washing machines left and what looks like a rota
Kremlin mouthpiece Dmitry Peskov has amusingly side-stepped a reporter's question over whether #Putin still had confidence in #Russia's military leadership.
"The special military operation continues. And it will continue until the goals that were originally set are achieved"
A spokeswoman for #Ukraine's armed forces in the south, has confirmed the story I wrote about yesterday, that invaders are trying to make deals to quit #Kherson.
Nataliia Humeniuk: "destabilisation & demoralisation is so deep.. they have nowhere to go"
#Ukraine's post office has had a good war, starting with the "Russian warship go f*** yourself" stamp
Now they've issued a commemorative envelope called "Welcome to Hell"
Chief Ihor Smylianskyy said the new design recognises the phenomenal achievement of the army in #Kharkiv
When they told me to watch this video of how a hedgehog stopped an armed vehicle, I was expecting the non living type!
To be fair the spiky creature put up more resistance in #Kharkiv than the Russian army 😅
1/2 Earlier today an explosion was reported in #Taganrog in #Russia
Many people retweeted a spectacular video of smoke mushroom clouds against a bright blue sky, saying #Ukraine hit an airfield/planes/fuel dumps etc.
It's not true. Taganrog was cloudy today. Fake & real here:
2/2
#Taganrog is close to the border with #Ukraine, and has been used as a "staging post" for those forcibly deported to #Russia.
Today's smoke may have been due to air defence working, possibly downing a drone which crashed to the ground. Here's a video from #Baza TG channel
According to officials in #Belgorod, #Russia, a shell fired from #Ukraine killed one person and injured 4 more.
They say the missile landed just 200m from the border, in the village of Logachevka.
The dead man was an 80yo from #Ukraine and 3 of the 4 injured also said to be🇺🇦
A 🇺🇦Commander has taken a selfie video at the local government building in #Sviatohirsk (RU: #Svyatogorsk) to tell of the victory in the strategically important town, also home to the sacred Lavra site.
An explosion reported in occupied #Mariupol tonight.
#Ukraine's exiled adviser Petro Andryushchenko says "Explosions in the Kalmius district of Mariupol around 19:40. The evening ceases to be languid."
No photos yet.
Maybe someone attacked the new monument to Aleksandr Nevsky
In the words of Alex Ferguson it's "squeaky bum time" for Russians in #Ukraine right now.
Many media in #Russia report that 🇺🇦 forces are advancing on #Mariinka as 2 battalions come from #Uhledar. They fear #Donetsk itself can be surrounded.
The so called "DPR" dismissed fears
Citing a local journalist, 24-Kanal site reports another assassination attempt on a collaborator in #Kherson.
Tetyana Tomilina is described as the self-proclaimed rector of Kherson Uni. A bomb in her apartment killed her bodyguard and badly injured her.
It looks increasingly difficult for Putin to keep both sides happy and the last thing he wants is to have to send "peacekeepers" right now!
Armenia reports bombings tonight
Hello again.
Day 1552. A holiday in many countries "Whit Monday" in most, Spring holiday in others (inc UK) and Memorial Day in the U.S
But after 4 years and 3 months, memorials are still being made in Ukraine because our leaders, collectively, let them down.
Here's the daily🧵
I'm still not quite sure where Saturday ended and Sunday began - the days merged into one for me.
What I do know is there were >120 new posts over the 48 hours, that's an average one story every 24 minutes, over the entire two days.
1/2 There are new murderous attacks by Russia already today in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Explosions have been heard in the city of Dnipro after an alert for ballistic missiles. Smoke can be seen, but no initial news of widespread damage, so hopefully air defence did its job.
Here we go again then. Day 1550 of Ukrainians wondering if they, their home, their relatives, will be bombed today.
About 16 million people have been born in the US and 15m in the EU since Russia started its full invasion of Ukraine.
Welcome to Saturday's daily🧵
Friday was a cracking thread, with vodka cheaper than a single tomato, legless Russians celebrating, Moscow claiming a college in occupied Luhansk wasn't housing Rubicon pilots and their drones and Ukraine causing more mayhem deep inside Russia.
#UkraineSanctions have been successfully employed again!
Lots of action in Russia last night, even before I closed the thread. Around 8am this morning another Ukraine strike in Perm' region, a distance of about 1700km.
Putin's gone from the expected capture of Kyiv before the end of Feb 2022 & annihilation of Ukraine's leaders & the country's culture, to begging China to keep it afloat & trying to quell dissenters at home as bombs fall!
The daily🧵
A quick reminder, everything I do is free. No extra content behind paywalls or subscriptions.
Every single day, documenting everything important about the war and about Ukraine. Still never missed a day. If you are able to support here's the link:
Wednesday 20 May is Day 1547 of Putin's catastrophic full invasion of its peaceful neighbour.
Russia has lost a large part of a generation of men - dead, dying or those who managed to emigrate. Reserves spent, economy collapsing.
Putin, not Zelenskyy, is Russia's biggest enemy
Let's start the daily thread in the traditional manner with the link for the start of Tuesday's thread.
A lot more destruction on both sides, as Putin grovels in China. Click, but remember to come back for today's news...
Welcome to THE daily thread on Day 1546 of the war.
Russia is showing small signs of desperation.
More economic woes, more Ukraine air attacks deep inside Russia, a desperation to strengthen ties with allies and having to make new nuclear threats.
All the news in one place:
Here's the link back to the start of Monday's thread for those catching up.
A day when Russia lost more equipment, including a helicopter, but also bombed the hell out of Dnipro, while the EU looks for a lead negotiator to meet Putin.
One thing I learned last night I'll repost here as very few people saw it last night, and for Ukraine watchers it's very interesting and potentially important.
Will Zelenskyi dare fire Zaluzhnyi so he has no platform in the run up to an election?
I've now had confirmation of one fatality in Russia's attack on Kyiv.
The injury count is now up to 16.
This is a video from first responders, trying to rescue those trapped in a collapsed apartment building in the Darnytskyi district.
Air alerts are beginning to be lifted in more regions of Ukraine.
Among those is Khmelnytskyi, where there was a drone swarm on the military airbase. No damage is reported.
