Today’s opening of #China’s Communist Party Congress will be dominated by a long speech from Xi Jinping which will sound turgid and formulaic but the choice of words has been workshopped for months and analysts will be pouring over it for any signs of policy shifts.
People will be searching for any shifts in economic policy priorities or any moves regarding #China’s foreign policy, especially say in relation to the #US. Naturally, Chinese people will be looking out for any signs of light at the end of the Zero-#Covid tunnel.
Looks like no changes to Zero-#Covid in #China in a hurry. Xi Jinping just said "people's lives come first; we will not waver in our Zero Covid policy".
Re #HongKong Xi said: “We’ve fully implemented the policy of one country two systems… we’ve helped Hong Kong enter a new stage in which order has been restored”.
typo in the thread above: pouring should have red poring over.
Xi Jinping spoke about his crackdown on corruption in the Party and how it had "tackled hedonism". In terms of #China overall he said, "We must not lose sight of our shortcomings and tackle problems..." (but didn’t mention what these problems are).

He said that "religions must be Chinese in orientation". This is a justification for demolishing mosques and various mosque structures, especially in #Ningxia and #Xinjiang. It's part of a push to make Islam in #China Chinese rather than having Arab-style art, structures etc
Re the environment X said: "We'll boost low carbon industries and promote low carbon ways of life. We’ll intensify pollution control. We’ll work to eliminate all serious pollution" (but coal not being eliminated yet because) "We'll build the new before discarding the old."
Xi said: "We’ll continue to promote economic links with #Taiwan... We’ll continue to sincerely pursue peaceful re-unification but we’ll never promise to renounce the use of force as an option..." then, without blinking, into the next subject with "Promoting world peace and..."
With youth unemployment nudging 20% for months in #China, Xi said, “Young people you should follow the Party’s guidance… You should strive to be the new era’s young generation building China into a modern socialist country. Your youth will blossom into full splendour”.
Near two hours after he started, Xi Jinping's speech has now finished with great applause at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. #China
Notable for what wasn't in Xi's speech: no mention of soaring youth unemployment; no mention of the property crisis; no mention of economic & social pain from Zero-#Covid in #China. Overall, it was 2 hours heavy on standard rhetoric and light on specific solutions to problems.
The headline for Chinese people though will be no easing of #China's Zero-#Covid measures. Lockdowns, mass testing, health code scanning and travel restrictions here to stay for the foreseeable future: bbc.com/news/world-asi…
What happened when #XiJinping visited Zhangbei. Well, according to #China's Party-controlled media, it was something of a miracle... bbc.com/news/av/world-…
Let's try a little snapshot research. Amongst those living in #China, who knows somebody who has not been fully vaccinated for #Covid? Colleagues? Friends? Relatives? Just thinking about it quickly, I can think of at least six people I've met. Others?
The responses to this are in keeping with the anecdotal evidence I’ve heard from lots of people in #China. Most I’ve asked seem to know someone who’s not been vaccinated against #Covid. It makes me nervous about the veracity of official vaccination rate figures.
I've met people in #China who've thought that vaccination isn't necessary because they're not likely to get infected. They're also fed up with #ZeroCovid restrictions but haven't understood that people like them need to get vaccinated before restrictions can be lifted.
The images coming out of #Chongqing are apocalyptic. Mass #coronavirus PCR tests being carried out as bushfires rage following months of heatwave with a record drought threatening crops and severely limiting much needed hydroelectricity. #China
Some more info on the vast drought across southern #China…
Large queues with what appear to be hundreds of fire fighters lining up for #coronavirus PCR tests in #Chongqing. This shows the priority being placed on zero #Covid in #China. Even as fires rage through forests, emergency teams must participate in mass testing.
The camel head bozo is at it again. I’ll give you a clue: the BBC wasn’t even there. @ChinaDaily is part of this ahem “journalist’s” job description spreading misinformation? Interestingly, this utter garbage has also been re-tweeted by a Chinese diplomat.
So @ChinaDaily we’re still waiting for an apology. I know facts are not the strong suit of your staff but if they’re going to attack people publicly they should probably be remotely right about what they’re talking about and not, like in this case, demonstrably 100% wrong.
In #China what do you do when you’ve bought an apartment and 5 years later it’s still in a shell of building? We met the people who just moved in and started living in concrete caves without power or water… bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…
These people are living in really tough conditions: sweltering heat, no water, no power. They say they have nowhere else to go. This is the front line of #China’s property crisis. Modern cave existence: The people living in unfinished apartments bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…
As a result of our visit (see video link below), the authorities had a meeting with the developers and the residents and ordered that work resume on this building. So far though these people in #Xian have seen no evidence of the developers resuming work. bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-…
#Covid cases taking off in #China's #Anhui and #Jiangsu provinces. Also, in the city of #Xian, restaurants will halt in-house dining for 7 days, schools will start holidays early and universities locked down after a #coronavirus outbreak. New infections in #Beijing & #Shanghai.
Over the next three days in #Shanghai, 9 of 16 districts have announced two rounds of compulsory #Covid testing for all residents. People have been told they need to produce a negative #Coronavirus test in order to leave their housing compounds. #China
There have been only around a dozen official #Covid infections in #Shanghai, prompting the mass testing of millions of people in the city over the coming days. #China
