3. The total training volume (dumbbell weight × number of contractions) in Lifting-Lowering (5745 ± 1020kg) was double of that in lifting (2930 ± 859kg) and lowering (3035 ± 844kg), because 3 sets of 10 contractions were performed for both directions in lifting-lowering group.
4a. Group that both lifted & lowered weights increased the maximum force they could produce on a lift by 18%, & increased biceps muscle thickness by 11%.
The people who only lowered the weights nearly matched that, increasing their maximum force by 14% and muscle size by 10%.
4b.
The lifting-only group increased their maximum force by 11%, while muscle size increase was insignificant.
5a. The spring action of a large protein called “titin” in the muscle fibers produces greater force during eccentric (lowering) contractions while using less energy, and more titin could account for the increase in muscle size, which is called hypertrophy.
5b. Eccentric muscle contractions produce greater neurological adaptations in the spine and brain than concentric (lifting) contractions.
6. Conclusions
*Eccentric training increased muscle strength & thickness similar to concentric-eccentric training, despite half training volume (concentric contractions contributed little to the training effects).
*Focus more on lowering the weights rather than lifting.

Longer daily #sedentary time increases the risk of #Knee, #Hip and #back #pain

1. 20-25% of people aged 50 or more suffer from orthopedic problems such as knee joint pain, hip joint pain, back pain and knee stiffness. Sedentary lifestyle is a major risk factor for them.

2. In a recent meta-analysis, the usage of hearing restorative devices (hearing aids or cochlear implants) by participants with hearing loss was associated with a 19% decrease in hazards of long-term cognitive decline.

A man who would become unconscious after singing romantic Kishore Kumar's Songs
1. 6 months ago, a 45-year-old man visited me for evaluation of a fainting episode that occurred while he was singing for a private gathering. He was a schoolteacher and singing was his passion.
2. On the fateful day, he had uneventfully sung a few songs of other singers.
On public demand, he sang “Pal pal dil ke paas”, a popular Kishore Kumar's song. A few minutes after completing the song, he collapsed on the stage and became unconscious.
3. His pulse rate was 110 beats per minute and BP was 160/100 mmHg. He was shifted to a hospital for evaluation.
He had regained consciousness while being taken to the hospital.
ECG, Echocardiogram and Cardiologist evaluation were normal.
