1⃣ That although #LossAndDamage costs run will into trillions of US $'s, in the short term focusing on getting a few tens of billions of US $'s a year to support the poorest and most vulnerable communities would be wise.
3/12. 2⃣ Funds to address #LossAndDamage don't necessarily need to come from governments they could come from countries imposing a tax on every fossil fuel company registered in their jurisdiction.
4/12. 3⃣We are likely to end up with a mosaic of funding channels for different activities to address #LossAndDamage, some under the @UNFCCC and some outside it.
5/12. 4⃣ In the @UNFCCC negotiations there will need to be some give and take, in good faith, amongst the developing countries themselves as to which countries should be eligible to receive #LossAndDamage funds.
6/12. 5⃣ Deciding on who receives #LossAndDamage funds at the community level is the most urgent question, with some communities needing support likely belonging to middle-income countries.
7/12. This is critically important for existing #LossAndDamage funds such as the #GlobalShield and the @V20Group Fund of the @TheCVF because the test will be to see how quickly they are able to respond to the needs of communities already impacted by the #ClimateCrisis.
8/12. 6⃣ To quickly make money available to address #LossAndDamage a more proactive approach is needed, including taking the funds to the the victims of the #ClimateCrisis instead of waiting for applications.
9/12. 7⃣ We will likely end up with a mosaic of actors coordinating #LossAndDamage actions, some under the @UNFCCC, others outside but there needs to be someone to coordinate this.
11/12. 8⃣ With every bit of #LossAndDamage that is occurring, whether in poorer or richer countries, the people who are paying for the things that are lost and damaged are the victims themselves.
2/9. This letter is a Cease and Desist Notice is to demand that #FossilFuel CEO's immediately stop opening any new #Oil, #Gas, or #Coal extraction sites, and stop blocking the clean energy transition that is urgently need.
3/9. The letter highlights that #FossilFuel companies KNEW for decades that fossil fuels cause catastrophic #ClimateChange. That they MISLED the public about #ClimateScience and risks (#LossAndDamage) and
DECEIVED politicians with disinformation sowing doubt and causing delay.
1/11. With the final gavel of the @COP27P behind us, here ends @LossAndDamage’s coverage of #LossAndDamage at #COP27. We thank you all for reading what we have shared with you. Now It is time for us to rest and travel home to our loved ones.
2/11. But before we do we wish to extend huge gratitude to all those within our Collaboration and beyond have worked tirelessly for months to deliver a #LossAndDamage fund and the operationalisation of the #SantiagoNetwork for #LossAndDamage.
3/11. We are grateful for the solidarity and unity of the G77 and China and in particular the leadership of #Pakistan under the team led by H.E @sherryraham and lead negotiator #LossAndDamage@VicentePaoloYu.
2/18. 📢GOOD NEWS: #COP27 has established a #LossAndDamage fund! Following courageous and consistent championing for 30+ years by countries on the frontlines of the #ClimateCrisis. This is a historic moment that sets us on a pathway to #ClimateJustice.
3/18. During this time, climate-vulnerable countries were supported by the tireless efforts of #CivilSociety who have and will continue to demand that polluters #PayUp4LossAndDamage. We’ve put our heart and soul into this for decades now and we are not stopping anytime soon!
1/25.📜It’s day thirteen of #COP27. We’re in overtime now and behind closed doors, Parties have been working with the @COP27P to find common ground on funding arrangements for #LossAndDamage.🧵
3/25. Key messages included, @RachelCleetus on the G77 and China’s continued expectations for #COP27: "Climate-vulnerable countries came with a clear ask. They want a #LossAndDamage fund under the COP and the CMA. Then we can talk about getting it operationalised."
1/5.⚡️WHERE ARE WE AT?⚡️:Good morning Its day 13 of #COP27 and we have run into overtime. We are waiting to hear what will happen throughout the day as heated bilateral discussions continue on “funding arrangements” for #LossAndDamage. 🧵
2/5. But make no mistake, everything is still up for grabs and we are still pushing for an “operating entity” (be it a fund or facility) to be established under the financial mechanism of the @UNFCCC at #COP27 to address #LossAndDamage.
3/5.Don’t forget, this is what AMBITIOUS means: The operating entity needs to be under the CMA and the COP, it needs to deliver new and additional funds, it needs to be based upon equity and CBDR-RC, it must cover ALL vulnerable developing countries, not just the most vulnerable.
