#DearTeachers,

During the #busy #holiday #season it is important we not overlook our #Christian #minority in their celebration of Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh.

1/24
Although it coincided with Purim last year, Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh is not the Christian Purim.

2/24
Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh is the yahrzeit of Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh, a Christian tzaddik who died on 20 Adar II, 4221.

His yahrzeit is celebrated according to the Pope Gregory #calendar on 17 March, which this year falls today, on Adar 24th.

3/24
Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh is an especially meaningful tzaddik to the Christian inhabitants of Medinat Eire, which has a substantial Christian minority.

4/24
Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh was enslaved by pagan pirates and was credited with introducing the Christian religion to Ireland and building schools and Christian shuls there.

5/24
Christians believe that Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh banished all snakes from the island of Eire, much like the Pied Piper; however, modern scientists dispute this claim, since they are unable to find evidence in the fossil record that Eire ever had snakes.

6/24
Some scholars believe that ‘banishing snakes’ is a euphemism for converting pagans to Christianity, but if so, Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh was not very successful, since pagans clearly outnumber Christians by a considerable margin in Medinat Eire.

7/24
In fact, some scholars believe that Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh was set for the 17th of “March” in order to give Christian children something to celebrate in the season of #Ostara.

8/24
Christians in Medinat Eire have a custom of celebrating Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh with tefillah at their Christian shul in the morning, and a festive seudah in the evening.

9/24
Though this yom tov falls in the middle of Christian Omer II (“Lent”), a month of traditional fasting, normal Lent restrictions are lifted in honor of the yom tov, as with Lag B’Omer.

10/24
However, there are no bonfires, no haircuts, and no shooting of arrows on Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh.

11/24
Christian-Americans of Irish descent may also observe the holiday of Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh with a street parade of other Irish-Christian families, perhaps organized by a local Christian shul that davens according to Nusach Irlandi.

12/24
Some cities with large populations of Irish-Christians, like Chicago, even indulge them by granting petitions to dye their rivers green for Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh.

13/24
Among Christian-Americans of Irish origin, it is customary to celebrate Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh by eating traditional Irish-American dishes such as pickled brisket, boiled potatoes, boiled cabbage, and a traditional yeast-free, chemically leavened bread.

14/24
On Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh it is traditional to drink copious amounts of #Irish beer, which has a special harp-shaped hechsher to indicate it is kosher for yom tov. Some beers may be tinted green in honor of the yom tov.

15/24
There is no obligation to drink until you no longer recognize the name of Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh.

16/24
Even though yellow and white are the traditional colors of Christianity, the Christian people, and all Christian holidays (because it is traditional to color-code another people based on the colors of a foreign country’s flag)…

17/24
… many Christians have a custom of wearing green to mark the holiday of Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh.

18/24
They believe wearing green is a way of making themselves invisible to playful green-clad elves called Leper-cons, which pinch anyone who has not shielded themselves with green attire.

Some take it upon themselves to do the pinching, in gross violation of negiyah consent.

19/24
Leper-cons are believed to be ill-tempered fairies who mend the shoes of other fairies. Christians believe that Leper-cons keep stashes of golden coins whose location is marked by a rainbow.

20/24
Another motif of Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh is a clover with three leaves, which was considered by early Irish people to be a sacred symbol of the arrival of spring.

21/24
Leper-cons and clovers are elements of traditional Celtic and Christian #religions and are therefore not considered appropriate motifs for #PublicSchool observances.

22/24
However, the color green, harps, and rainbows are acceptable secular motifs for #PublicSchool use, in classrooms where teachers may wish to teach their students about this minority holiday.

23/24
Shabbat shalom to everyone, and Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh Sameach to those who celebrate!

#DearStaff,

#Chag #Purim sameach to everyone!

As you may have noticed, as your Christian colleagues ask for numerous days off again, we are now in the midst of yet another #Christian #holiday #season.

1/27
As we all celebrate Purim, Christians are celebrating the Christian holiday of Christian Purim! Christian Purim is observed the last day before the beginning of the Second Christian Omer, which is also called Christian Elul.

2/27
The #Pope #Gregory #calendar used by #Christians is manipulated to ensure that Christian Purim always takes place on Third Day (which is referred to by Christians as “Tuesday”).

#DearTeachers,

Tomorrow some of your Christian students may be observing the Christian holiday of Yom Saint Valentine Ha’Kadosh, more commonly known as Christian Tu B’Av.

It is one of their important religious ‘Feast Days’ that even the least frum observe.
1/15
The holiday falls on Shvat 23rd this year, which is 14 Febuairiy according to the #Christian #holy #calendar #of #Pope #Gregory.
2/15
Even though we are all accustomed to celebrating love on Tu B’Av in the summer, Christians have a tradition of celebrating Yom Saint #Valentine Ha’Kadosh as their own #cultural #day #of #love #and #friendship in the bitter cold of winter.

#DearTeachers,
This week some Christian students may be absent during the #Christian #holiday of #Candlemas.

It falls on the second day of the “Gregorian” month of Febuairy each year; this year, the date falls on Shevat 11th.
1/9
Consult gregcal.com for the date of Candlemas in future years.
2/9
"Candlemas," more commonly known as Yom Groundpig, is a #holy #day for Christians that commemorates the pidyon ha’ben of the prophet Yeshu, founder of their religion, and also of the prophet’s mother bringing her korbanot to the Beit ha’Mikdash following the prophet’s birth.

#DearStaff,

Just a brief reminder from #HR about our company's #holiday leave policy.

Recently, certain employees were taking excessive numbers of days off for their #religious #holidays.
1/5
The employees who came to work as usual had to work three times as hard to make up for all the absences. We are a welcoming company that supports the religious observance of all of our employees, including those who belong to #minority #religions.
2/5
However, if you need to take off a day for a religious holiday, you must bring in a letter from your religion’s rabbi to confirm that this is an authentic holiday.

In addition, so-called “travel days” before and after holidays may not be accommodated.

#DearJWHIA,

I have a relative who is Christian (long story). For the last few years, I've bought Chanukkah greeting cards for my family and gone out of my way to get this relative a card that is more appropriate for *her* chag.

1/x
Last year, she complained that I got a card for the wrong holiday, explaining that it was not yet Yom Easter, but Yom Christmas! Who can keep track with the weird solar calendar they follow??

2/x
This year, I made sure to get her a Christmas card. She then pointed out that it had the wrong kind of tree (a maple tree is a tree, so I don't get what the big deal is) and the wrong kind of star!

Dear Geveret Smith,

I am writing to address some concerns that you expressed in your letter about the class #holiday activities held over the past week.

First of all, I want to express that our #PublicSchool loves ALL our #students.

1/x
We have a #diverse #student body, we hold #diversity training every year, and we prioritize being good #allies to our #Christian students.

2/x
Naturally, we were surprised to receive such a long list of complaints from you about our #winter #holiday #programming, considering that we go so far out of our way to accommodate our #Christian students.
