1 in 4 Americans believe that #AsianAmericans are MORE LOYAL to their country of origin than to the United States

1 in 5 Americans still believe that Asian Americans are partly responsible for #COVID19

31% of Americans believe that #AsianAmericans should be subject to MORE SCRUTINY when working in areas considered critical to US global strategic competitiveness

78% of Americans see #China as a threat. Among those who do...

83% believe that China is a military/national security threat

74% believe that China is an economic threat

The belief that China is a threat has implications for perceptions of #AsianAmericans

Most Americans think of #China when they think of the AsianAms' countries of origin

Recall that 1 in 4 Americans believe that AsianAms are MORE LOYAL to their country of origin than to the US

#AsianAmericans are the least likely group to feel they completely belong and are accepted in the US

Only 22% feel they completely belong and are accepted

Asian American #women and #young Asian Americans are especially likely to feel this way.

When asked why they don't feel they completely belong and are accepted in the US

🟦 58% of #AsianAmericans report it's b/c they've experienced #discrimination due to their race/ethnicity

🟦 43% of AsianAms report it's b/c they don't see others like them in positions of power

3 in 10 Americans are still unable to name a single historical event or policy related to #AsianAmericans.

When asked, "Don't know" was the most popular answer.

Even after being prompted, 43% of Americans don't know about the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Fewer know about the murder of #VincentChin:
66% of Americans have never heard of him.

75% of Americans think racist attacks against #AsianAmericans are a problem today that should be addressed

Most Americans believe that incorporating the experiences of #AsianAmericans into teaching American #history is important:

🟦 30% believe it's important but should be optional

82% of Americans OVERESTIMATE the size of the #AsianAmerican population

FACT: Asian Americans account for 7.2% of the US population

🟦 71% of #AsianAmericans see their status as closer to POC than to White Americans

🟦 60% of Black Americans & 59% of Hispanic Americans also see the status of Asian Ams as closer to POC

🟦 By contrast, 62% of Whites see Asian Americans as CLOSER to themselves than to POC

Older Americans and Republicans are more likely to see #AsianAmericans as closer to Whites than to POC

Age-old #stereotypes of #AsianAmericans continue to endure

Seemingly positive, they can be easily weaponized against #AsianAmericans and other POC

Americans may hold #stereotypes of #AsianAmericans, yet when asked to name a famous #AANHPI, the most popular answer was DON'T KNOW

26% can't name a single prominent #AsianAmerican #NativeHawaiian #PacificIslander

Despite many misperceptions of #AsianAmericans and #PacificIslanders, White, Black, and Hispanic Americans believe they share economic interests and core values with #AAPIs.

Cross-racial solidarity could center these interests.

When asked what could improve relationships with #AsianAmericans & #PacificIslanders, non-Asian Americans cited:

🟦 More #education

NOTE: 13% of respondents who cited more interaction didn't have any relationships w/Asian Americans.
