Americans are being manipulated systematically by the Mercers, Trumps, Putin and other actors in an attempted mutiny of our democracy. /2
They’ve learned over time that campaign contributions can buy you influence in a democracy… /3
…but they’ve also learned that in a democracy, campaign contributions only go so far… /4
…b/c politicians’ power is vulnerable. B/c of us. The people. Our views – the will of the majority – provide a check to this influence. /5
If our elected officials step too far outside the job we elected them to do, we vote them out. /6
Rupert Murdoch figured out long ago that to truly steer a democracy, you have to manipulate the people into sharing your views. /7
The developmt of social media and diversification of media streams provided fertile ground to take the Murdoch philosophy to the extreme. /8
So a combo of Mercer’s data mining companies & Cambridge Analytica, Putin’s hacking, bot armies & strategically disseminated propaganda, …/9
And Trump’s overt lies, race-baiting and demonizing of HRC on the campaign stump set out to steer public opinion to their ends. /10
It was a multifaceted attack: a bought, hollow shell figurehead with no moral compass was used to spread hate and lies. /11
Social media was bombarded with fake news. Twitter bots were deployed to reinforce Trump’s wretched views. /12 washingtonpost.com/news/politics/…
More "traditional" right wing media propagated lies with gusto. /13
And then, the insurance policies to ensure the scaled would tip: /14
Election machines/systems were hacked to impact vote totals (WE NEED MORE INVESTIGATION to understand impact) /15 nytimes.com/2017/09/01/us/…
And, of course, the @GOP have been cheating their way to the majority for years through gerrymandering & voter suppression /16
All of this adds up to an attack on our democracy. The question isn’t whether it happened, but just how coordinated it was. /17
These ppl can’t buy all the politicians, so they’re steering politicians by influencing the public. That’s how you take over a democracy /18
Now that Trump is in the WH, the views he espoused in the campaign have been legitimized in American, lending them credence. /19
Even if Trump goes down, the ideas gained traction: climate science denial, primacy of markets, flaccidity of govt, hate of non-whites. /20
The Trump Presidency is a farce. A con. Has no substance. The goal is to steer the democracy far to the right while benefitting the 1%. /21
The attack is still happening. Putin, the Mercers, Kochs, Trumps etc. are weaponizing the 1 thing that can take the US down – voters. /22
In an information war, the perpetrators of the war attack their subject quietly, unbeknownst to the attacked. That’s the idea. /23
Secure the voting system. Neutralize disinformation channels. Educate the public. Vote out the corrupt @GOP. Protect our democracy. /
