Highlights from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs re-confirmation hearing show array of challenges for military below the level of armed conflict
Our tech over-match is declining, ability to project power threatened & responding to multiple, simultaneous contingencies more challenging
Adversaries' speed in narrowing capability gaps is accelerating, incldg ballistic & cruise missile tech, electronic warfare, space, & cyber
Our precision, long-range, standoff & manned capabilities have diminished as enemies' Anti-Access & Area Denial capabilities have increased
Aging logistics infrastructure (i.e., roads, rails, ports, bases) & brittle defense industrial base limit ability to sustain protracted war
Russia & China are in a different threat category given their ability to engage US across full spectrum of nuclear & conventional conflict
Russia is an existential threat b/c of nukes, cyber, propensity to demonstrate aggressive behavior, & willingness to employ military force
Long live the pivot! CJCS says plans are still to home-port 60% naval & air assets in Asia by 2020 & position 70,000 soldiers in the region
Asia posture also includes our "most capable assets": P-8As, Global Hawk drones, submarines, CV-22 Ospreys, B-2s & B-52s, F-22s & F-35 JSFs
If Asia Stability Initiative, DoD would invest in basing, increase air & maritime assets, improve resiliency, & expand & diversify munitions
I read it so you don't have to ... but, just in case, here's the link armed-services.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
