High incarceration rates in the U.S. affect not only the individuals incarcerated, but their families and communities. Quantifying that effect is challenging, but important for cost-benefit analyses of incarceration policies.

There is a long literature showing that incarceration reduces crime rates (primarily through an incapacitation effect), but it may have unintended negative impacts on those closest to the person incarcerated.
The incarceration of a parent could hurt kids by removing a source of emotional support & reducing HH income. On the other hand, removing parents who are engaged in criminal activity could be beneficial for children if those parents created instability or were poor role models.

MARCO RUBIO’s HYPOTHESIS: Those against gun bans “want to prevent mass shootings, too. They view banning guns as an infringement on the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens that ultimately will not prevent these tragedies.”.
This is called the Scientific Method. To test his hypothesis (which means millions of lives), research is required.
RESEARCH BIAS; Rubio has an A+ rating from the gun rights group for supporting NRA-friendly legislation. According to the New York Times, he has received $3.3 million from the group. (Research bias,performing the research influence the results to portray a certain outcome.)

We must act to stop our gun violence epidemic. Here's what I would work for in Congress:

1. Close background check loopholes immediately.

2. Reinstate funding for CDC to study causes & solutions

3. Form Congressional Select Committee to investigate

Gun violence is personal to me. I was 17 & in high school near Columbine in 1999. My boyfriend went there. It ripped our community apart & showed me that innocence isn't something our kids can have anymore. Gun violence is an epidemic. 2/
How many people have we lost to suicide by gun? How many have been injured or killed due to domestic violence at the end of a gun? How many kids know what an active shooter drill is at school? How many of us have to die before we recognize this for what it is: an epidemic. 3/

1. We need to talk about the unspoken truth beneath the Republican Party's push to reform the U.S. tax code.
2. That unspoken truth ought to color deeply our understanding of the GOP, specifically that the party of limited government and fiscal conservatism is no such thing.
3. That truth is this: the Republican Party wants to add more than $1.5 trillion to the national debt. The number could swell to $2.2 trillion.
