What a disgusting slur on Savita by @RonanMullen Her pregnancy was a much wanted one. Reprehensible stuff. @TodaySOR #repealthe8th
He baldly stated that if “abortion on demand” was available she wouldn’t have been pregnant. Such lazy, ignorant language is appalling.
He was picked up on this by @campaignforkate thankfully.
Not shocked by this given his callousness to bereaved families in FFA cases. But his shocking disregard for Savita’s family is disgusting
Senator Mullen’s callous disregard for Savita and her family lays bare the rank hypocrisy of his suggestion that he cares for women.
Remember this the next time you hear him talk about concern for women. So much for #LoveBoth
Regardless of reasons for doing so, women do not choose pregnancy casually. Savita requested one because she knew her health was at risk

We were campaigning for a full inquiry into abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin at the time. The Church was still denying that abuse was commonplace & that it knew about it & had covered it up. It argued that Canon (church) Law was superior to the law of the state. #Stand4Truth
It was also the the same period within which the Vatican asserted diplomatic immunity to block my civil action against the Pope to try force them to reveal what they knew about the priest who had raped me and dozens of other boys. #Stand4Truth

I was 14. Within 6 months of the visit I was raped for 1st time by a Priest who had been ordained despite the Church knowing he was a paedophile. 15 years later I sued Pope JPII to try get the Vatican to tell the truth about what they knew about the priest jrnl.ie/4151688
The priests parishioners complained repeatedly to Bishops about the priests behaviour. They also complained to the Papal Nuncio. The Nuncio responded and told them the Holy See (the Pope) was aware of their concerns. Nothing happened. He kept abusing. For years.
He was only finally removed from ministry when I made a criminal complaint in early 1995. In the meantime he had abused scores of other children. And the church had continued to ignore repeated complaints about his abusive behaviour.

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/

One of the only big opinions left for #SCOTUS to issue is #Janus, where plaintiffs seek to ban security fees for all public unions.

Unions are widely expected to lose. But pay close attention to HOW they lose. The reasoning the Court uses matters a lot.
Let me explain.

The prior case law on this issue is Abood v. Detroit Board of Education. In that ruling, #SCOTUS said security fees are not compelled speech — as long as they don't fund political activity, and unions keep a firewall between bargaining and political campaigning.
In other words, #SCOTUS said if a union is campaigning for a political candidate, that's compelled speech, and workers not in the union can't be made to pay fees for that purpose — BUT if they're using the money to bargain contracts for workers, that's not speech and is allowed.

We really need to talk more about #abortion as an option for women.
It's hard to say this and hard to hear it for many, but just because you discover you are pregnant doesn't mean you must carry that pregnancy to term. Your decision will last the rest of your life--and the rest of the life of any child you decide to carry to term.

And no, I am not advocating #abortion.
I'm advocating thinking about parenthood & all it entails.
Because once you have a child, you can't just walk away from that life.
And women/girls are talked into maintaining pregnancies every day.
More discussion would change that.

Abortion-rights activists—both in South Bend & nationally—are still coming out, guns blazing, to stop a pregnancy-resource center from opening a new location. A few quick thoughts on how intensely revealing this is.
The new PRC is an initiative of the Women's Care Center, founded in South Bend in 1984, which currently operates several other PRCS in the city. Their primary opponent in opening the new location is Whole Women's Health, an abortion group that wants to open a South Bend clinic.
In other words, an abortion group that does not even have a physical clinic in the city is attempting to prevent a pregnancy-resource center from offering South Bend women resources to continue their pregnancies.

One of the embarrassing things about keeping the "SF/F canon" frozen in amber is that writing is an art whose state advances the same as any other.

Today's writers are BETTER than Heinlein, Asimov, and Tolkien. They have better tools and are better at using them.
Asimov's stuff isn't just dated because he assumed that 500,000 years from now men would use atomic forcefields to disintegrate cigar ash that hits their desk while women used atomic knives in the kitchen.
It's dated because the state of the art of writing has moved on. Modern readers want more. More inner life to their characters, more richness to the settings. Lived-in worlds, lived experiences. A lot of other stuff even more ephemeral.
