That governments spend money more efficiently than you do is literally the reason we have governments
So 16 hours after I sent this tweet my mentions are still being inundated by libertarians and Fox News viewers who appear to be baffled by the concept of public goods and/or economies of scale ...
Case in point ... this tweet
But let's interrogate the idea that individuals make efficient financial decisions ...
In 2016, Americans had $747 billion in credit card debt. That's substantially larger than the entire bloated Pentagon budget!
How about this one: Americans spend $70 billion every year on lottery tickets. $1.5 billion on extended warranties. They leave unspent $1 billion on gift cards!
The movies Mother's Day and Dirty Grandpa both grossed around $35 million domestically!
$165 billion is wasted every year by people throwing away food! We spend $7 billion on ATM fees. People who do their own taxes lose $1 billion in unclaimed refunds
And by the way, just to be clear I waste money on ATM fees, throw away food all the time (though I've started composting) and make inefficient financial decisions! We all do.
And of course one can point to all kinds of inefficiencies in government ... but obviously, incontrovertibly, w/o any question the administration of a public good can be done more efficiently and effectively by a large pubic institution than by individuals
... that this is even a controversial notion says a lot about how right-wing anti-government talking points have completely overwhelmed any ability to have a coherent national conversation about the role of government
