Recently members of the #IBD community have been slandered for not trying “everything” to cure their disease. Reminder: there is no cure for IBD, but we are working on it.

What was the purported “cure” you ask? A #carnivore diet. Let’s examine ... 1/
A carnivore diet, aka zero carb diet, is devoid of all foods except animal meat, fish, eggs, +/- lactose-free dairy. 2/
Despite the lack of supporting studies, proponents claim it to be a panacea, saying it cures diabetes, depression, helps weight loss and libido... the list goes on. This is all supported by testimony and conviction (highly biased), & not based on objective scientific evidence. 3/

1/ At the risk of sounding uncharacteristically snarky, there's only one way I know to "boost" your immune system -- which is to activate it by getting sick or hurt.

Kind of like boosting the presence of firemen in your neighborhood by setting your house on fire...
2/ Look, seriously, instead of trying to look for a silver bullet supplement or drug -- recognize there is *very clear* evidence that poor lifestyle and diet can result in an inadequate immune response.
3/ As much as I try to stay away from the diet and exercise wars, I can't really avoid it when someone is asking me about the immune response.

Not only was there a lot of evidence of this before #covid19, there's quite a lot of it unfolding in real time during the pandemic.

1/ Hey #NutritionTwitter -- Help become a resource on #coronavirus/#covid19 and provide good advice and information right now to your followers as this timing is very meaningful.

Whatever partisan battles you've been fighting, I'm sure you originally got in this to help people.
2/ Viruses can survive outside the body for a while, but under most conditions it will die in time from exposure to things such as ultraviolet light or heat. This is why quarantining yourself for a couple weeks is so powerful.

You want to isolate it from new hosts (other people)
3/ If you have a healthy immune system that is becoming increasingly deadly to the virus inside your body while forcing its remains outside your body (in your living space) to endure exposure before coming into contact with any new hosts, you've massively reduced the risk.

1/ While I haven't talked about it yet, I've been #carnivore throughout August as an experiment. But I switched to #KetoAF (basically carnivore, but with higher fat-to-protein ratio) for this final week before the month is over. <I took labs at the switch off, of course>
2/ Credit to @siobhan_huggins for twisting my arm into this as it has been quite illuminating. One sneak preview observation is that it truly is the most satiating of anything I've tried to date. I've found I can straight up consume less food overall while at these ratios...
3/ Also, mega props to @KetoCarnivore, who has really pioneered some excellent work in this area. I'm excited to see what her new data shows along with the many others working through these new parameters.

@siobhan_huggins will record a video on this experience fairly soon.

1/ (Thread) Some people have asked me to share more about my weight loss and fitness journey. I don’t talk a lot about it, mostly because I’m super embarrassed by the photo on the left. I know 267 was my highest weight- but I’m not sure I was actually 267 in that particular photo
2/ But I didn’t like having my photo taken at that weight (odd for a professional performer, right?) Anyway, I was suffering from Hashimoto’s with not a lot of help from an Endocrinologist, beyond the advice of “lose weight.” Obvi. I was trying.
3/ I was also in a very stressful/negative work environment. I was eating a whole foods diet, and hardly ever ate processed foods or dined out, and was doing cardio 3 times a week. No weight loss. I felt terrible. So I started tracking everything I ate through MyFitnessPal.

A little note about the #LessAndBetter meat message - I'm quite well known for calling this out as unhelpful and actually harmful to developing more sustainable farming systems, but it's not *just* because I sell meat, although that has given me an insight into the effect of such
a destructive message. The problem stems mainly from the vague nature of the message - less than what? better than what? what is better? what is 'meat'?- it's not at all clear, if you take greenhouse gas emissions, for example, cows emit methane so they must be bad, right, so
let's eat chicken instead? But hang on, chicken is the most intensively reared meat available, so how can that be 'better'? Well, maybe we first need to work out what we mean by 'meat' and how things have changed. According to FAO Stat, in the half century to the UK has changed

Watch these public comments! It's like a showdown of plant-based vs low-carb/keto.
Commenter #13 = @WaliPriyanka and she just dropped the MIC on this committee. "THE DGA is a Joke. Know your audience. Half of the country is prediabetic. Sugar intake should be 0%!"
@WaliPriyanka Commenter #7 = @low_carb_doc pushing for a low carb / keto based on science and practice.

1/12 I’ve been tweeting about #T2DM and my #LCHF diet for about a year. Here are some of my observations. I DO observe that a LCHF way of eating has helped me lose weight, sustain that weight loss and get my Type2 into remission. So I advocate it as a method for others try
2/12 – I DO observe a large cohort of other people achieving similar success in removing obesity or reversing #T2DM via #LCHF or their variants, #Keto , #paleo , #carnivore , #banting or #atkins
3/12 – I DO NOT observe large cohorts of people achieving and advocating success in reversing #T2DM through other methods. I would like to; we would all like to; more sustainable options means more patients with better outcomes
